Sick of the F@H games

So first we see that SMP has a lot of points/PPD. So I spend thousands of $$$ on multicore processors (up to 24 cores/threads) So then they keep upping the cores/threads, was 12, then 16, soon to be 24. So then they come up with ZETA units and a lot of PPD for fast/expensive video cards. So I spend thousands there. Then they stop making the units available for ZETA (for at least the second time for days to weeks on end.

I have had it with the money game they are playing, even with my disposable income as high as it is, this is ridiculous. So I will let my current hardware become obsolete, and then quit. If they want my computing power for free, they better make it worth my while in some respect, at least give me the satisfaction on points for my thousands.\\And the result is, PPD going from 750 k ppd down to 300k ppd. Same hardware.

It is certainly frustrating!

I have been enjoying getting different BOINC Milestones :)

There are many good Med. projects: Rosetta@Home, Docking@Home, GPUGrid, Malariacontrol, SIMAP, World Community Grid. POEM@Home should soon have more WUs for GPU.

Mark, that hardware you have would be fantastic for World Community Grid and GPUGrid if you want to stick with biology projects. Both of those aforementioned projects have made great contributions to cancer research. Case in point - there's some promising breakthrough in the fight against childhood cancer thanks to WCG volunteers.

The drama with F@H is the reason I left as well. There are lots of BOINC projects to choose from and it would be a shame to see that hardware go the way of the dust.

I made the switch from F@H to BOINC projects quite a while ago. Though I did fire up my two nearly-new 7790 cards for the F@H race in Dec.

Sorry to hear that Mark, seems to me their policy of regularly ramping up the core count is just losing them crunching power on those bigadv WUs

As the other guys have mentioned, when/if you do quit F@H their are plenty of other projects about that your h/w will crunch nicely!
Personally I've gotten into some of the space projects lately, returning to Milkyway@home which is about mapping the milkway & simulating galaxy mergers with an additional aim of trying to understand & map dark matter. With just my HD 5850 I'm the 8th highest producer in the UK, lol. MW loves DP/FP64 strong cards.

And I started Asteroids@Home last year after F@H, A@H :-
The data is processed using the lightcurve inversion method and a 3D shape model of an asteroid together with the rotation period and the direction of the spin axis are derived.

Whilst A@H does now have a GPU app for Nvidia cards it's most efficient on CPUs, & it makes good use of them as I found it runs the CPU 4-5C hotter than F@H!

I want only cancer research. My dad died of prostate cancer, and both of my grandfathers. So I am trying to help cure it, before I die of it.

I know that WCG has some cancer sub-projects. Help Cure Childhood Cancer, and Mapping Cancer Markers.

I've been doing some of those WUs.

(Actually, did HCCC wrap-up? I don't recall getting any of those WUs lately.)

From what I read, HCCC is done. Maybe they'll do a Phase 2 one day if needed. The Help Conquer Cancer team are the same guys doing Cancer Markers so we can probably expect cancer research to continue on WCG for the foreseeable future.

There are still ZETA units available, if you switch GPU to Linux you should get them since they are the only ones available there.

I understand your point. This has also frustrated me and this is why I prefer the boinc credit system.

My focus is also cancer research an I have been supporting worldcommunitygrid mainly these last years.

I like Worldcommunitygrid because:
they manage to be very stable server-side
they release science applications (cores in f@h language) that run stable too (as opposed to some other projects)
they have a good progress report and information policy

take a look at their active research:
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/viewAllProjects.do

I am supporting only the "Mapping Cancer Markers" right now.

Our team at Worldcommunitygrid is still small in proportion to other major projects. I (we ;) ) will be glad to welcome some of your cpus over there.

For your gpus gpugrid comes to my mind as an alternative to f@h, but they have a similar tendency to just ignore non-cutting-edge hardware
