decided i am done with new games for a while.
Bored with all the new mmog. Star Wars TOR. WoW. Everquest

Sony (SOE) twisted my knickers with my game card FUBAR.
Briefly - game card defective. EB Games says cant do anything for you - too bad so sad
SOE says sorry about that - too bad so sad - cant help you. have a nice day.

sick of all the new games requiring internet connections to play as single player.

so i am going back in time. To the Good Old Games (GOG) website and play some old time games
Just got Baldurs Gate 2 complete edition for 10bux. "go for the eyes boo, go for the eyes!"

I think a lot of people are feeling that same way.

I recently got an upgraded Laptop (since i travel a bit) and so far all I have loaded are:

GalCiv2
Baldur's Gate 1-2-ToB
Icewind Dale 1
Planescape: Torment
NWN2
KoToR 1
Diablo 2

One or two others. But the name of the game is all old school. I have my old version of Fallout and plan on loading that on and going DOSbox on it's ar$.. Same with Xcom: Apocalypse.

There are a LOT of old games that are just worlds better than the new stuff, which seems to be 100% about shiny graphics and micro-transactions. Just because it doesn't have real time 3D water effects and a top of the line physics engine, doesn't mean that it isn't a good game.

Yeah, I bailed on all the AAA big Publisher games quite some time back.

I've been doing a lot of GOG and various Indie Bundles, and pick up the "AAA" games whenever they drop the absurd DRM chains (cheaper that way too).

I have been amazed at some of the Indie games that have come out.

If you haven't checked it out yet, you may want to take a look at Legend of Grimrock (excellent throwback game).

Some other (Indie) favorites:

Cogs
SpaceChem
World of Goo
Osmosis
Machinarium

Lots of others I can't recall right off - I have such a huge backlog of games (none AAA) at this point that I don't if I'll ever catch up with all of them.

Who cares if he is a rep or not honestly? Most people over 19 agree with him and are looking for services like this. All I play recently are old games I bought on PSN like FF7 or FFT because the rampant cheating on new games makes them not only boring and useless but not fun at all. I'm not giving any of these companies $60+DLC+passes+Private Jet+Bentley+Mansion just so I can get frustrated and log off every night when some douche kills me with some unseen magic power in a real war based shooter. Quite frankly, gaming is not worth your time unless you are playing with friends you know and trust.

Thus I only play single player games and refuse to buy this refuse that modern devs shovel out every 8-12 months, even for my kids who think they are so cool because they see commercials for them every minute of the day and they talk to other kids whose parents are morons that just keep shelling out money for them so they don't have to talk to or spend time with them.

Heh, with the exception of Tribes:Ascend and Skyrim I've been doing that for the last year: Vampire the Masquerade, Witcher, Stalker, Max Payne, Far Cry, etc.

And why wouldn't you honestly? My wife and I tried to go back and play Socom Confrontation on our PS3's and it is overrun with hackers. On any given night there is maybe 2-3k people playing it at most and we still can barely get in a game without cheaters ruining it. Keep in mind that this game is 4+ years old and nobody plays it, which just means there are millions of people out there cheating just so they can grief people.

It speaks to how pathetic this country really is, though, doesn't it?

I'm in the same boat. Picked up BG and BG2 from GOG myself, modded for widescreen and tutu (BG1 using the BG2 gfx engine) and I've been clipping merrily along.

Unfortunately I want a little more depth than most indie devs are doing. Not a lot... just a little.

I'm thoroughly over paying $60 for games that do not prove themselves to me. And I DO NOT want any more incremental costs, like so many of the mobile games re pointed with microtransactions.

Umm.. maybe both of you just suck? like you said, it's an old game, why would people bother cheating, what would they be proving, and to whom? :'(

I have been holding off on playing BG1-2 because I have a sick interest in what they are doing over with the Enhanced Edition. It will probably be crap and no benefit, but they have my interest. Sad really.

Lol. umm GOG rep.. ummm no

just an old gamer sick to death of DRM BS, single player games needing internet to play BS

plus if you read the catalyst was SOE screwing me over a defective game card.
Then there is Diablo 3. Cant play single player stand alone game with out internet. If there are
server problems you get kicked from game. Enough i say.

so call me a gog shill if you wish. the only connection i have with that company is just today i signed up for an
acct and bought a game. A game i can play any time any where with out copy protection with out DRM

It's a shocking concept, ownership in a free enterprise market. I, for one, am also tired of the litany of codes, download restrictions (i.e. I can only use the PSN games I buy on 2 consoles when I own a home with 4 consoles in it), bullshit left of the disc DLC, and the litany of other greedy practices devs/pubs use now.

I will probably be replaying NWN or something 10 years from now, and so will my kids. The game industry has lost one of it's best customers to their own greedy bullshit and GoG is exactly the kind of service a disenchanted former consumer would appreciate.

some people don't cheat to "Prove something to someone". they do it merely because they can. or because they don't want to put in the effort to be good. or out of habit. Or just to be a jerk.

My cousin has a Delorian. Maybe I can convince him to take you on a ride and bring it up to 88MPH.

I think it is usually either the lack of effort or to be a jerk that is the usual reason. It took me years to get good at shooters but now I am ranked in the top of the leaderboards of every shooter I play for more than a week. That only happened because of effort and that is what most people are not willing to put out these days. Everyone wants to be a superstar but nobody wants to be in Drama classes all through high school.

I feel the same way, all games these day are Consolized.
It is more like a movie than a game, an $60 interactive movie.

Over the last year or so, I replayed :

Populous 2
Diablo 2 + Lord of Destruction (with high res mod)
Deus Ex : Invisible War (with widescreen mod)
Vampire : Bloodlines Masquerade (with widescreen mod)
One Must Fall : 2097
Death Rally

I keep OMF and DR on my lappy at all times. Comes in handy when you're stuck somewhere (mechanic, airport, etc.)

Will the Deus Ex widescreen mod work with a Steam copy, Playa? I understand you may not know for sure but was just wondering if you had heard of anyone doing it with the mod you used. I am guessing it would work since you can still access all the files.

Modern gaming is pretty much a disaster right now, everything feels so cheap and driven by the mass markets of casual gamers.

It's a really good time to revisit some older more enjoyable games, I'm incredibly tempted to break out Theme Hospital again.
