my credit union charges no fees for it's ATM or any other ATM. Some banks charge me to use their atms so I usually get cash out at the local grocery chain (Publix) as they don't charge.

So, yes, there are banks that don't charge. I think there is a national bank (not credit union) that doesn't charge to use their atm's as well. But I don't recall which one, I want to guess washington mutual but I'm really not sure.

Use your bank's own ATM, & you shouldn't have fees.

Around here Washington Mutual doesn't charge ATM fees (even for other banks' cards), but that doesn't eliminate your bank's penalty for using another bank's ATM.

Better option, get cash back from a store.

I don't think any (or at least none that I know) bank charges fees for using their own ATMs. The problem is when you use other bank's ATMs. Even so, you can't just find a bank that doesn't charge ATM fees, because you usually get screwed two ways:

1) your bank charges you for using their ATM card at someone else?s machine
2) The bank whose ATM you use charges you for using another banks ATM card at their machine.

I think some banks (like etrade) will reimburse you for any fees like #2 above, but probably only for a limited number of withdraws.

Here are your options if your main concern is to avoid ATM fees:

1) Which bank's ATM network is closest to you whenever you need cash? Is it BOFA, Wells Fargo, Washington Mutual, CitiBank, etc.? Get a checking account with that bank, most banks offer an "ATM only - FREE" checking account which has no minimum balance requirement and no monthly fees.

2) Join a local Credit Union. My credit union charges $0 transaction fee if you use another credit union's ATM and they have ATM's everywhere.

3) This is the best option, you can keep your current debit/check card and pay $0 for withdrawing cash. How? Use a POS terminal for debit cards at your local Safeway, Von's, K-Mart, Walmart, Target, Albertson's, Fred Meyer's, even the USPS. Basically anywhere that has a POS terminal, you buy groceries or something small (that you need) slide your debit card, press debit card, enter in your PIN and the amount of cash you want back.

Compass Bank has no atm fees, and they refund all atm fees imposed by any other bank's atm's.

Compass doesn't have branches in every state though, mostly the south.

just buy a candy bar at like CVS, Walgreens, Eckerds, or even a Grocery store and charge it to your debit card.

Get cash back.

no fees

Well said. Unfortunately, unless you get an account with a credit union and only go to ATMs that don't charge a fee (like other credit unions), you're probably SOL.
