Shuttle XPC, has anyone bought a refurb?

Newegg.com sometimes has refurbished models of the Shuttle XPC systems, but they simply say "refurbished models do not come with the accessories shown in the pictures". I have attempted to e-mail their service department, but no response. I am trying to find out what exactly they define as "accessories"... On many of the higher-end systems a heat pipe is required to cool the CPU, but if that is considered an "accessory", then the price of the refurb really isn't that great anymore.....

Anyone have any experience with this issue that could enlighten me as to what an "accessory" really is???

For anyone interested, here is what the NewEgg service people told me:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us at www.newegg.com. All refurbished product, unless stated otherwise, are to be considered a barebone product, no accessories which would normally be included in a retail version of the product. Any cables, software, manuals, etc. are expected to be included.

Thank you for your inquiry, and have a great day.

Thank you

I bought an SN41G2 refurb from them and AFAIK, it was brand new with all the stuff it should've come with. I've heard the same from others who have bought refurbed shuttle boxes from them.

ok, cool. Thanks for the info. They say on their site that no accessories are included, but maybe that's just to play it safe for the odd-ball system that is missing parts.

Yeah, I think what they mean is there's no guarantee you'll get everything. Good luck if you do decide to purchase one! :)

I think I've bought 8 of them. Yes, EIGHT refurb Shuttle boxes from Newegg. Also a new one :)

1 - SV25 - When I opened it up it smelled burnt and there was a Fry's Electronics !!! return sticker inside the system saying the power supply was dead. I returned it untested.

5 - SV24 - Two out of the five were missing the PCI riser adaptor, rendering the PCI slot useless. Otherwise there was nothing important missing (some missing driver discs, cabling, HSF, screws).

2 - SS51G - One of these was like new, nothing missing. The second one wasn't missing anything but the aluminum cover was scuffed up and the AGP slot didn't work. A real bummer because I found this out after the 7 day or so warranty that Newegg provides for the refurb stuff. Shuttle gave me an RMA number so I sent it to them yesterday. It did come with the heatpipe cooler, though it was bent a bit.

hmm, sounds like some bad luck on the SV models. I just picked a SV24 up from another user here at the forum, it's a nice system, though no good for gaming. I'm worried about getting a better one for gaming because if it doesn't have the heatpipe then the cost savings really isn't very good. I've never bought a heat-pipe, but I'd bet they aren't cheap....

Shuttle shop

PH4 - Heat Pipe Kit for Socket 478 $39.00
In Stock

How about getting a new one? The SS51G is now $215 with free shipping at Newegg for a new one. Supports 400/533 FSB and DDR333. Just doesn't support Hyperthreading.

You can actually just run a low-profile heatsink/fan inside on the cpu, and an exhaust fan on the back panel. Or so I've heard (and seen... once)

I was looking at on that newegg had available this morning for $186. It looked to me like a very good system for a pretty low price. I'm not an Intel fan, but it would take a P4 and had AGP and PCI slots available. Plus it had a built-in handle for carrying it around to lan parties and such. Kinda hard to stack something on top of it though... Either way, looked to me to be a good system.
