I just recently upgraded my CPU to the 4200+, and without realizing there are performance differences in thermal paste, I just used a generic paste. And I?ve just recently found out about XPCTools and CoreTemp.

I set the Smart fan controls in XPCTools to a threshold of 25C (the default is 40C), in order to compensate for the generic paste. As things stand now, XPC is reporting a light duty running temp of 36C (CPU). However, CoreTemp is reporting much higher temperatures of about 54C in each core. I read that the max temperature for the X2 4200+ chip is 65C, and I?ve already seen spikes of 60C+ on my system from CoreTemp.

Which figure is more accurate? And is there a cause for concern? Is it worth the trouble to reinstall the CPU using Arctic Silver, or should I just lower the Smart Fan threshold even more?
