shuttle ss51g conflict with nvidia drivers and modem?

at first i thought i was the modem that had conflicts with my graphics card and then i thought it was the graphics card just plain faulty or something.

well let me tell you what the problem is:

when trying to connect to any server online (UT2003, Counter-Strike, Quake 3) it just doesn't work, i mean the computer works fine and there is no real problem, it's just the game refuses to connect to the server. when using gamespy i can ping any server i want but i just cant connect to one.

here is my system specs:

shuttle SS51G
shuttle FS51 motherboard (SiS 651 chipset)
256mb crucial pc2100 ddr ram
gainward geforce 4 ti4200 64mb powerpack! 650 TV/DVI
using AC' 97 onboard sound
modulartech conexant internal V.90 56k PCI modem
IBM 75GXP 30GB HDD

when i put the graphics card in i got this problem, i also had some kind of directX problem, that i sorted by formatting etc

anyway so i have a clean fresh instal of windows XP on a freshly formatted HDD and i install all the drivers for the shuttle ss51g and all my programs are back on.
i can connect to any server on gamespy without the drivers for the graphics card installed just fine, so i know it's not the actual graphics card, and i have tried using the onboard graphics that is on the shuttle, i have also tried an old ATI rage 128pro 16mb AGP card and with drivers installed for them it works fine online.

it just seems to happen when i use the drivers for the geforce 4, i have tried serveral drivers, 29.XX series, 30.XX series and the 40.41 drivers, i also tried using the drivers that came with the gainward card.

the most bizarre thing is that when i tried my mate's cable modem (USB) and with my geforce 4 with drivers installed i can connect to the damn servers, so it seems like the 56k modem i have is the problem, but it's not!

what on earth is going on?
