Shuttle SG41J4, new build

Wanted to "play" with a pair of low cost machines so I ordered parts from Newegg - 2 Shuttle SG41J4 barebones, 2 WD 500meg HD, 2 Sony DVD burners, and 4 gb (2x2gb) OCZ pc3-6400 RAM for each box. To cut a corner, I picked up 2 Pentium d - 820 processors (used) off of EBay.

Put the first one together, plugged it in and .....nothing. Lights light up, fan blows, but in about 20 seconds ..... nothing - it shuts down. No sound, no video out.

Swap in the other processor, same thing. To prove a point to myself, I put the other together and.....nothing.

Two identical failures make me think that the hardware may be alright, but the builder is bad. What am I missing that would cause this type of roadblock?

Go ahead, I have thick skin and broad shoulders. Give me all your nyah-nyah idiot calls, but please help.

Questions

When you turn it on do you get a single beep?

Do you have another machine that you could test your CPU(s) in?

What type of thermal compound did you use with the processors?

Lots of variables here. Most of my trouble shooting consists of moving things around and seeing if the problem moves as well...

Have you tried removing everything except a single stick of memory to see if the system comes up then?

Be patient.

I get nothing! Just fan(s) and power light. Wait 20 seconds and they shut down.

No way to test the CPUs save for taking them somewhere (possible).

Have not tried starting with only one stick of memory, but with both acting the same way, kinda doubt the ram is the problem. I am thinking processor fault.

Just a follow up to agree with WildW's post.

Shuttle lists the G41 and ICH7 as the SG41J4's chipset .

Here, Intel implies that the G41 supports the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors exclusively.

Diagnosis: Hardware incompatibility...

Well, that certainly 'splains a lot!!

Told you it was a faulty-builder problem!

Now, next question - will I be able to find either of those Core 2 processors that will use the ram I purchased for this project?

Dave

Which raises a question - What happens if you try to use memory that does not match the processor? That is, can I slap in any 240pin ddr3 stick? Or, shouldn't the FSB numbers agree?

As you can probably tell, I am not current in the "state of the art." Last time I tried a home build, it based upon a '286 processor and I was happy to pay only $50.00 per megabyte of memory.

Dave

So long as you get a supported processor it will work with the memory. Processor FSB speed isn't a factor.
