What are my options for repair of an out-of-warranty SD36G5M with a blown cap on the mobo?

I assume Shuttle will charge an arm and a leg.

BTW, I am L.A. if you know of any good B&M that does this repair.

Thanks.

Actually, we get Shuttles repaired by Shuttle all the time. They charge like $60 to do the repair job.

We've seen about a 30% failure rate on the Shuttles we sold. Obviously, we no longer sell them...though we still have some under warranty and thus have to get them repaired. Shuttle has a 1-year warranty on their parts, but I believe they typically charge $60 to get a motherboard repaired.

That seems reasonable. I may have to contact them to see if that is the corporate rate or if I can get that price, too.

I wonder, however, if there is some place I can walk it in to get this done, rather than have to ship it to Shuttle.

Probably not. That's beyond the skill of most computer shops (who knows how to solder anymore?). We have experimented with it, but only have about 50% success rate, and I doubt that Shuttle would try to fix it after someone else soldered a new cap to the board. Plus, it probably wouldn't be any cheaper.

Last time, we sent 6 boards in for repair and it took them about a week to turn it around on us. It really wasn't all that terrible. The most difficult part is actually getting ahold of someone there. Also, on certain models, they may even be able to just sell you a brand new board. I know that was available to us for about 6 months before they stopped for the model we used.

OK, I found a local guy who can replace the capacitor for me, but I have to get the part.

Where do I get a 6.3v 470uf capacitor for this motherboard?

or just an used computer (recycling) place, if they'll
let you look through their collection of motherboards.

which they are more likely to do if they know you as
someone who has already donated some old computer
stuff.

a lot of times they end up in a shipping container,
sold for about 5 cents a pound, and shipped to
Taiwan or another country, for disassembly.
they shouldn't be too concerned about the weight
of a few caps.
