shuttle cpu temps too high

Over Christmas I got the socket 754 shuttle with the VIA chipset. I have had zero problems with it since I have gotten it. I am currently using the smartfan setting for fan speed. I have only heard the fan rev up a few times when playing games for more than 45 minutes straight. Today, I was playing counter-strike and day of defeat, which usually does increase temperatures very much and I started to hear the fan reving up. The game then froze and the I was forced to restart. I was able to alt tab out fo the game but not able to force it to quit. When I restarted the computer, I installed motherboard monitor 5. The reported cpu temperature was aroun 70 degrees celcius. Smart fan now has the cpu fan going full speed all the time. I have three questions:

Would inputing the wrong motherboard in motherboard monitor 5 have an impact on how the temperature is recorded?
Is it possible that my temperature sensor is faulty or just broke?
Is it possible that my heatsink has been unseated? I moved the computer around a few days ago but have not noticed problems until today.
Which of these three possibilieits is most likely?

thanks

I have the two stock fans, one for the power supply, and one for the cpu heatsink. I currently have a passively cooled 9600 pro as well.

I looked into the problem a little more and it seems that motherboard monitor was misreading the temperature and causing smartfan to go crazy. When I checked the temps in bios it averaged between 42-47 degrees.

Right now, I have the problem fixed by turning off smart fan. I just set the fan to low. AS far as I know, if the cpu gets too hot it will still ramp up. I have not yet tried uninstalling motherboard monitor to see if that may have caused the apparent problem.

I have a different Shuttle box (SN95G5) and I turned off "smart fan" as well. The problem is that the fan speed throttles according to the CPU temp.

While, normally, that's a good thing, the Shuttle CPU cooler is really quite excellent. It actually cools off the CPU to where it's lower than the ambient temp than the rest of the PC. When using the smart fan RPM's ran about 900RPM and kept the CPU around 42 to 45C even at load. But, the rest of the system was in the mid 50's, including the two hard drives.

I changed the fan control to be "low" noise. It bumped up the fan speed to 1300ish. (no audible difference IMHO) The change in temps were dramatic to say the least. CPU temps idle around 36C and the Case around 42C. The hard drives max out about 44C.

Download a software fan controller like SpeedFan. That way you can set the fan to FULL and adjust the speed with the software. I am guessing you have the SN85G4. I had one up until a few weeks ago. I rigged up a ThermalTake SmartFan II 75 CFM fan to a 10k Ohm pot. and a SPDT switch to control the speed while doing intensive stuff. Even at full speed, my load temps were in the 64 C range while running folding client. Your idle should be around 40 C or maybe a little lower. I had a Clawhammer 3200+ in mine ( which run hot anyway ).
