I'm at loss as to what to try next.....here's the sitation:

WinME boots fine
Win XP or 2000 Pro....doesn't even recognize. I've done installtions from these CD's before without a problem.

Toshiba DVD Drive, WD 60GB 7200rpm drive (which it does not seem to recognize as the Master drive on IDE0)

PNY GF3 card as the video card....even took out the Network Card and Audigy card (though will try that again)....running out
of GOOD ideas......

TIA!!!!!

Is the WD 60GB alone on the cable? If so(with just 2 IDE devices it should be), make certain that the HDD is jumpered for single and not master. If your not sure of the config settings go here When you say it doesn't recognize win2000/XP do you mean that it won't boot from the CD?

Dap - thanks. My further question with the WD hard drive is why? I have never used cable select before. Yes, it's by itself...when I have it as Master, the motherboard doesn't recognize the drive. Stuck on a Maxtor 541DX as Master, by itself, and the MB recognized that without any problems. Hook up the DVD drive on the same channel as the WD HD and no problem. Frustrating....but lesson learned.

As for the boot problem, figured that out. Now, if that labotomy would only take......

You shouldn't have to put it on cable select just single. WD only wants you to use master when there's another device on the cable. The single setting is for when you want to use it by itself, in fact it's supposed to ship in the single (standard install) mode. Did you set it up for master when you got it? Anyways, don't sweat it, the first time I did an install for someone using a WD a couple years back, I just did it the way I always had with other drives and had the same issue. It's amazing what reading the directions can do to solve problems

(In my best Eric Cartman voice).....I'm.......so......mad........

Actually, quite calm all things considered. XP installs without a hitch....no problemo....take out the CD, attempt to reboot....get the dreaded DISK BOOT FAILURE message. Piece of $%^&!!!! I know it's not the install.....reason being, if the CD is in the drive, it will skip past the CD boot and then load normally. No CD in, no boot.

Okay, I write all of this crap....go back, do the fail-safe method in the BIOS and it boots. Again, the Cartman voice......maybe a Homer Simpson DOH! while falling down the cliff......

This Shuttle MB is definitely different than any other I've encountered.....cannot wait to figure out what option it was that caused this problem....maybe it was disabling the RAID....

Found a thread from someone with the exact same problem as yours (boots with CD in, doesn't without). The fix was to boot up the XP CD itself (set bios to boot CD first), then run the Recovery mode. Once in Recovery mode, use the "fixmbr" utility to repair your master boot record. You'll be at a command prompt of sorts.

This will tell you how to use the Recovery Console from the CD, and the description of the various commands:
