I have the following set up

shuttle ak31 v3.1
ATI all in wonder video
Athlon XP 1700+
Enermax 350W PS
TEAC floppy
Ricoh CD-ROM
Crucial 756 DDR DRAM (unbuffered)

I'm trying to assemble this system, but when I stick in the boot up disk and turn on the power, the only thing that happens is the system beeps repeatedly and there is no video output. All the fans have power, the hard drive spins, CD-ROM opens, and the floppy light comes on (though it doesn't appear to read the floppy)

Any ideas? Thanks.

one long beep and two short means video error - reseat your video card. Continuous beeping is ram error - reseat your memory or try one stick at a time.

FYI - In case you hadn't noticed, there is an official thread for this mobo.

Here's the link...

Official AK31 Thread

I just hooked up one of these boards. Works like a dream. Dont give up... It took me a while to get the floppy up and running. Don't know what I did, but all of a sudden it worked. Try checking all your connections and stuff and unplug / replug everything that's easy to get at. That's about all I can say about it. You might find more in the thread above...

I had similar symptoms when switching from an athlon 1.2 to an xp 1700. I knew the board was good, so I enabled the cmos jumper for 10 seconds with the computer off, and it fired up immediately.

The beeps are about 4 seconds long and are spaced by about 5 seconds of silence. If it is the memory, would that explain the blank screen? BTW, if it were a problem with the floppy would it beep like this? I have moved around the memory and tried it stick by stick but nothing has changed. I am using 3 sticks of Crucial 256MB 184-pin 32x64 DDR PC2100.

Thanks

A four second long beep almost sounds like video. I would start from bare essentials; just one stick of ram, and video card with no other card installed. Reseat the video card and clear the cmos like oldie said. I've read that you really got to give the board some time to clear cmos or it won't. Make sure that your ps is not connected when you clear it. BTW, was your board shipped with the latest bios that recognize the XP?

I reset the CMOS but that didn't work. I put in a Diamond Stealth PCI card and took out the ATI all-in-wonder AGP card but that didn't work.

How would I find out what BIOS version the board shipped with? I just assumed the BIOS would support the XP since it was listed on AMD's list of recomended boards. I bought it from Newegg.com.

I really apreciate all the help.

Can you get a hold of a non xp cpu and try that? The board I got from NewEgg had the earlier bios which did not fully support the xp. You have to flash to the ak31s2e9 for full xp support. I know some of the later boards did ship with this bios and I'm not sure that you can't successfully boot with the earlier bios. Anyway, the fact that your board is beeping means your close so I would keep trying other tricks. I would certainly borrow a different processor and see if it boots with that. If it does, then check your bios. Did you pull everything down to a bare minimal yet and try? Oh, when you say the floppy drive light comes on.... does it stay on?

Unfortunately I don't have access to any other chip. When I tried the system I left in the video card, the floppy, and the cd rom along with one stick of memory. Should I go farther in stripping it down? The floppy drive light comes on and stays on, though like I said before it doesn't seem to be reading anything.

Thanks.

Check your floppy cable. The light isn't suppose to just stay on. It won't read a floppy until it boots and looks for an system disk.

Check the floppy cable. I think that the floppy cable will actually fit even if it backwards/upside down, i.e. the pin 1 red stripe is on the wrong side. The floppy will power up and the "busy" light will remain on. Sadly, this is from personal experience.

Good Luck!
