Hello,

I was all set to get my new system at newegg when I started reading that the shuttle ak31 rev3 motherboard is picky with powersupplies. I was wondering if anyone is using the enlight 7237/300watt with the shuttle. Would getting the 340 watt version be better or should I go for another case/psu? Any recommendations will be helpful. (btw, I can't spend that much money :) )

thanks in advance.

Here was my experience with the Enlight 7237 case and the Enlight 300W PSU and the AK31 v3.1. The first AK31 v3.1 was DOA, no posts, no video, nothing, with just the barebones and outside the case. I RMA'ed it back to newegg and got another one. The second one would go to POST and fail (the video two beep error) and no video. Then I bought a new video card since I was using an old STB velocity 128 AGP card. New card arrives, still no video. At this point I gave up and Sent both the Enlight PS and the Shuttle Ak31 v3.1 back and got a EPoX 8Kha+ and an Enermax 350W PSU, both are in my Enlight 7237 case and working great.

Of course, this is just my experiences, I know people whose PCs are working fine with the AK31 and the Enlight 300W PSU..

The weird thing is that I wanted to exchange my Enlight PSU with the Enermax 350W one and they refused so when I sent back the Enlight one, guess what newegg did? They sent me a Sparkle FSP300-BT 300W PSU!! Jeez, why didn't they just let me exchange it. The kicker is that the Sparkle one is a $30 PSU and is only AMD certified to an Athlon 850, unlike the Enlight one which is certifed to something around 1400Mhz, I don't recall the exact number but I know it's certified for the 1000Mhz CPU that I have.

i dont think there's any probs like you mentioned between enlight ps and shuttle.
It's more like the PS is defective or the mobo is defective. If both PS and mobo are not defective-you should not run into any probs whatsoever.

Posting this from an AK31A installed in an Enlight 7237 w/300W PSU. Also has a Leadtek GeForce2 Pro, Realtek NIC, Iwill SCSI card, 20GB 7200RPM WD HD, and a Lite-On 16X burner.

No problems at all, went together in less than 20 minutes.

I put together a system with the Enlight 7237 w/300 W PSU and a Shuttle AK31A a couple weeks ago and it went off without a hitch. It was just a 900 MHz Duron, but there didn't seem to be any issues at all.

Don't know about your particular combo, but I've had a few Shuttle AK31/AK31a boards that didn't work with a few Leadman/Powmax LC6100C power supplies. Those power supplies worked great with other boards and the Shuttle boards worked great with other power supplies. Also had the same brand power supply (but LC6100D model) not work with a Shuttle AV61 board. Same thing, the PS worked with other boards and the board worked with other power supplies. YMMV.

The shuttle website has the enlight PS listed as having "problems" with this motherboard. I have this combo and cannot get the bios to recognize both my CD-rw and my CD-rom. It recognizes either one but the CD-RW will not post when both are connected to the same IDE channel. I have upgraded the bios and have installed the IDE utility provided without help. I am planning on switching out my 300W PS unless there is something I missed. Any thoughts? Athlon 1.4 T-bird, GeForce 3 Ti200, Soundblaster Live! value

Does it work if the CD-ROM and CD-RW are on different IDE channels? I would suggest putting the CD-ROM as slave on the primary channel and the CD-RW as master on the secondary channel anyway so that burning is optimized anyway, but that's just me...

Interesting post, Zap.

Do you have any idea what the incompatibility between the AK31 rev 3.1 and the Leadman-PowMax psu might be?

I also have an LC6100C I got from CompGeeks. When I use it with an AK31 and power it up, nothing happens. Not even a fan. Dunno about RMA'ing the Leadman, if it works correctly with other motherboards. Don't have any to test at the moment. :(

Sorry about the previous message. Hit the wrong button...

MickeyBoy, it seems like your problem is maybe something different. I just spent an hour screwing around with an older PC that I put in a new case (an Enlight 7237, BTW), and the damn thing wouldn't power up - no lights, no fans, nothing. Took it all apart, tried starting it with the mobo outof the case on some non-conductive foam, it worked. But when I put the mobo back in the case, nothing. I'm thinking, WTF?? Then I took the mobo out abain, and it worked - so I looked in the case and there was a spare stand-off in the case where there was no hole in the mobo. I took the stand-off out and it now works perfectly - the board was shorting on the thing. I build computers all the time (hundreds so far...) and that's the first time that's slipped past me. Luckily nothing was damaged.

Thanks, Workin'. Your surmise might be correct, as I do have an Enlgiht 7237 case. I just got a spare psu from CompUSA and will get down to business this evening. Will let you know the outcome.

Hi Workin'

Well, this problem was simple. The $25 250W special from CompUSA worked just fine. The Leadman-PowMax 300W from CompGeeks was simply DOA.

Dunno about whether it would be a good idea to get a different replacement for my AK31, considering the posts above.

MickeyBoy - my Enlight case came with an Enlight PSU. Also, I've built 10 AK31A-based PC's (using Codegen, Enlight, and Enermax PSU's) and haven't had a single problem with any, I think it is a very nice board.
