Overclocking the Shuttle AK31 3.1 KT266a

Ok, here?s the deal. I picked up one of these to play with. Here?s what I?m using, at the moment:

Shuttle AK31 3.1 motherboard
Antec 412x 400 watt power supply
1.4 266fsb Tbird
Millennium Glaciator HS using AS paste
Visiontek Geforce 3
IBM 10/100 lan card
2 ? 256 meg Crucial PC2100 memory*
20 gig Maxtor 7200 ata66 HD
Cheapo 50X CD rom
NO SOUNDCARD(at the moment)
*started system with 1 - 256 meg Crucial PC2100 memory at first, in first mem slot

Booted system up, entered BIOS and set the following:
Disabled sound, serial & parallel ports, audio, joystick, & midi
Set USB to use ports 1 only
Disabled Video Bios Shadow
Installed Window 98(not SE), updated on net w/ IE 5.5 & Direct X8.0a
Installed 4.34 4 in 1?s
Installed nVidia 21.83 drivers
Installed GeForce tweeker , set to performance & O/C to 215/520
Entered BIOS & disabled USB, and set the following:

Memory to 2.7 volts, CAS 2, 4 interleave, Trp - 2T, Tras - 5T, Trcd - 2T, Queue Depth 4 & Command Rate at 1T
Set the Processor to 10X160, +.75 volts & booted system. Would post, loaded windows, but no go on Sisoft. Through trial & error, established that I could run stable at 158 fsb. Here are stats:

CPU ? 4437/2177
Multimedia ? 8649/10789
Memory ? 914/1147(WOOT!!!)
3Dmark 2000 ? 10,597
3Dmark 2001 ? 7,298

Installed second 256 meg Crucial PC2100 memory in slot 2 and ?? WTF, nada!!!! System would post, but that?s all! Trouble!!! Understand that I have a total of 6 - 256 meg Crucial PC2100 memory, and tried them all, through trial & error, could get into windows at 10.5 X 145, but 3Dmark would not run. OK, time to rethink this whole thing. Went back & ran benchmarks on each memory stick & found that I had only 2 that would do 158 fsb -?hey what did u expect? Installed both in slot 1 & 2 and?..same problem! Again, through trial & error got the system working with memory in slots 1 & 4(!!!!!) at 10 X 155, stable! Here are stats:

CPU ? 4364/2147
Multimedia ? 8511/10660
Memory ? 893/1109(STILL WOOT!)
3Dmark 2000 ? 10,771
3Dmark 2001 ? 7,251

Next up is install of Soundblaster Audigy soundcard?..stay tuned!

I exchanged a few emails with Kevin @ Accelenation and he tried all combos are Crucial on the Shuttle. They all worked fine for him. The more DIMM's you use on the board the lower the FSB. Works the same way on all boards. Also make sure your DIMM's are properly seated. Sometimes they can be a pain in the ass.

FYI Via has 4.34 4in1's out. I have had no problems.

There's another post around somewhere which claims 4 sticks of Crucial PC2100 (unbuffered) work fine in this mobo. I sure hope it does cuz that's what I've got coming Also, I looked on the shuttle website and in the manual and nowhere does it say you must use registered RAM. All is says is that the board will take up to 4 gigs of RAM.

That's me Had a marathon gaming session of 12+ hours on Fri.. & not one crash with this config.

Don't get me wrong, guys, I'm very happy with my results. Any who have been overclocking as long as I (Cyrix 150!)knows it's more art than science. While all 6 peices of my Crucial memory will overclock, some are definately better than others(can't wait for some DDr333!) For me, I was best able to O/C with my 2 best memory in slots 1 & 4 (0 & 3?). For others may be another combo. I didn't try more than 2, as I have no need for more than 512K....plus, the wife would get upset if I "stole" memory out of her 2 computers! I am very happy with this board....even my Creative Audigy seems to be working(followed the recommendations at Via Arena! Next up are my USB stuff & some gaming! Again, will let everyone know. BTW, I am using the 4.34 4 in 1's....misstype in first post, will correct!
