Shuttle 43G onboard sound problem

I built my father in law a basic shuttle box for web surfing.
Componets: Shuttle 43g
WIN XP PRO
Sempron 2400 (I think)
512 mb Corsair Value select
Logitec wireless keyboard.
80 gig WD HD
Cheap DVD/cdr combo
Harmon Karden speakers.

THe system works OK, but no sound. So I arrive here for the weekend, and there is no volume slider on the task bar. Go to control panel, and windows says no sound installed.

This shuttle box has 6.1 onboard audio. Clicking around in device manager, everything says is is functioning OK.

I tried to play an audio CD, Media player 9 tells me this:

0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

Well, I'm a noob and would like some help. A problem exists in that I accidently brought the XP disk home, and the computer is in a different state. So I can't reinstall windows.

Thanks in advance for help on this issue.

Either onboard sound isn't enabled in the BIOS, or you didn't install the audio drivers from the Shuttle disc; at least that's what it sounds like to me.
