hey all - the system building newb returns~

i was going to throw the following into a chieftec server chassis w/ a 350W enermax:

p4 2.6 800fsb
1 gig corsair XMS plat pc3200
120GB seagate 7200rpm 8mb cache
ati radeon 9800pro AIW 128mb
lite-on DVD/CD-RW combo drive
3.5 floppy

but i'm thinking a shuttle XPC series silver might be awfully nice if i can get away with it. as you can see, the PS is only 200W; i get the feeling that isn't going to be anywhere near enough to handle that stuff, especially the radeon. yet, i see that some customer feedback at newegg claims it's fine. anyone ever done this? if so, does it run ok?

I doubt it.
Both the P4 and the R9800 draw quite a bit of power.

As a reference, all the Compaq's we have around here have very low rated PSU's, and the new P4-2600/800 boxes still use 240W PSU's, and those sure don't have R9800's in them.

Yes, it will work fine. Mine is almost identical with the following specs.

P4 2.66 /non-HT
1 GB HyperX
120gb WD SE
ATI AIW Radeon 9700 Pro
Pioneer DVD-R

Lots of people running powerful machines in the shuttle boxes. Shouldn't have a problem.

I agree, the Shuttle PSU should be fine. I don't have one, but I know a couple people that do, and they run fairly powerful systems with the stock PSU. The issue isn't the number of watts, its the quality. I believe the Shuttle PSUs are derivitave or share design features of (or maybe are?) rack mount PSUs and these are all high quality supplies and will be sufficient.

I don't know the exact difference in Power consumption between the P4 and AMD Barton, but I do know that my brother runs this setup without problems:

AMD Barton 2500+
512 HyperX
160GB Maxtor
NEC multiformat DVD writer
Sapphire Atlantis 9800

The Shuttles PSU seems to be up to the task.

oh, absolutely.

my concern is for the radeon, which, if i'm not mistaken, is one of the most power-hungry consumer-level cards out there.

another concern that's cropped up is expansion. ain't a whole lot of room in the shuttle for that. heh, the only other case i was thinking about is a chieftec server chassis. it ultimately comes down to portability vs. expansion.

The Shuttle XPC uses an Enhance power supply, which is pretty high quality. Compare the ratings for it in terms of load for 3.3v, 5v and 12v, and you'll see it actually has the best PSU among all miniPC's.
