Shutting Down, without my say so!

PC is shutting down, as in a normal shut down/close programs etc without me wanting it to...

It happened last night, although in the opposite manner, where the system decided to boot up on its own just as I got ready for bed after a few drinks on the town. I shut it down manually, got back to bed and it happened again...Got back up, start button>shut down...then when it happened a third time I turned the switch off at the mains. Time for sleep...

Today I used it for about half an hour after wondering if it would do something weird and sure enough, a game I was playing closed to desktop, and the system went through a typical shut down. This happened a few times sometimes, back up n running and then same old..Once or twice it started really acting up and not even booting past BIOS.

I took the case side off, checked all fans. By the way all temps were fine beforehand checking with RealTemp and EVGA Precision X. I did a windows mem check with the F8 startup option if I remember right but should do another using memtest as I only left it on for 2 mins as I was more of the opinion that is was PSU/SSD weirdness I was getting.

I then removed all sata cables from all other HDDs and kept the SSD connected. In BIOS it would shut down after a given amount of time, quite random. In windows, which slowly became harder to stay in more than a minute, it would do the same thing. Never any BSOD still at this point, however on one failed boot I got a BSOD but didn't note the error...

I then did a backup of everything and decided to remove the OS and reinstall, under the vague impression that wiping the drive and starting again just might work. This, however, wouldn't get much past the installtion of the files where it would shut down, probably a silly idea considering even in BIOS the shutdowns occured but I considered the possibility of strange going on with SSD as I've heard them to happen before with other people...

I then decided to disconnect the SATA cable from the Samsung 830. I went into BIOS and sure enough, left it for about twenty minutes and no random shut down. Hmm..I thought...Is the SSD dishing out some strange vibes to the components and the system just wants to power down as if in a perpetual sleep mode? Is that even possible...?

I swapped the SATA cable on the 830. This time, BIOS remained somewhat stable..and I managed to install windows...

Ah ha!. A dodgy cable? Well I felt good as this was certainly progress...however.

Got windows installed, updated, drivers etc..pretty much got what I needed as essentials running....then just before, it happened again. I have a music sequencer running in the background and now when it wants to shut down it of course makes me force quit a program...at this point I cancel the shut down procedure. Seems like a way round it shutting down on its own, having some program that gives me that opportunity to cancel the process.

Not overheating/All temps fine. Not fan issues, all spinning fine. System is stable after the shut down is cancelled.. No other issues.

????????????????????

I've just heard about a sneaky 'shut down virus'. Could I have one o these?

Sorry for the rushed post. If there is anyone with some help for me, I'd be glad for it! Starting to wonder just what the hell is going on.

I know I should probably pull the 830 SSD and stick Win7 on an HDD, which I might start setting up soon by clearing one of my other HDDs of data to get it prepared but, I kinda don't wanna do that!....I know I should tho..

Before that, anyone heard of this strange occurrence?

Long story short...found a link someone with a somewhat similar problem had posted where a reply simply put a link to repairing windows update.

So far, it seems to have worked...What a strange issue. I'd wondered about it and your reply was on the right track, too, Xav...

Cheers.

Hmm, actually it isn't solved...Next step remove bits o hardware...

Really think it's a software issue. But here goes. Any other ideas out there?

Have you considered an exorcism? It sounds like you may have more then just a virus in there!

:) Yes..I have . It freaked me out when it started to boot up on its own after a night on the drink..

Anyway, I can't see anything in event viewer that makes sense...partly coz I don't know where to look, but also given any indication of a shut down it's under kernel power, and there are a few other things in there I just don't know what they really mean.

So, I'm just going to pull the SSD and try on a normal HDD. COrsair HX850W/i5 3570K/P8Z77V-Pro and 8GB Corsair RAM.

RAM tested with windows memory tester, passed fine. SMART on SSD is all OK. So, I am not sure.

I'm thinking it could be PSU. I have it in a surge protector. NOt a great one just a Belkin extension lead but I'm wondering if that also could be the culprit.

I'll remove the SSD and try...then after that I'll start troubleshooting the PSU, at least, try.

THat's just it...According to the system , it's not unexpected.

It just says:
The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition.

Next it says:
The operating system is shutting down at system time ‎2013‎-‎05‎-‎22T02:20:37.671966100Z.

Pressing the case power button can cause Windows to do a "normal" shutdown. Is something accidentally pressing up against your power button? It's also possible that the button/switch is failing and sending false signals to the motherboard.

Starting to think of hardware issues again. Just changed the setting for what the power buttons do. GOnna see if it's a faulty wire...

very annoying and very strange.

Yes, fardringle...This is something I'm aware of but there isn't anything hitting it/obstructing the button. Maybe the wires are dirty? I've turned the 'change what the power buttons do' option to do nothing. Gonna see if it still wants to shut down. Pressing the button of course does nothing now.

Cheers for thoughts and input everyone. Really hope I can solve this. Seems far from a hardware issue. Running kaspersky removal tool now to see what it finds. Also about to run TDSSkiller

Yeh did a scannow before reinstalling OS. OS is newly installed with very few trusted programs installed. UPdated all drivers,, had programs ready for install before touching the net. I have just finished a load of win updates tho...wonder if there is something they've screwed up??

Is the user referenced in the event your user name or the name of a system/service account?

It is likely something that you are referring to as essential is causing this behavior.

That's my theory as well.

To test it, go into the Control Panel into System and Security. Under Power Options, click "Change what the power buttons do."

Change it from Shutdown to Sleep, and see if your problem changes into the system going to sleep randomly instead of shutting down. If so, I think the power button itself is your culprit. (The fact that it's powering up on its own strongly points to this being the issue.)

Yeh I'd agree..Already done that mate a few posts up and so far so good. Well I set it to do nothing..

An old antec case that I wanna change for a FD R4 soon so...hope that's the problem. I know if it is it's a wire to fix but i'd like SSD bays and front usb3 ports. Coz I'm petty/silly.

Fingers crossed...

Well...that defo seems like the culprit..

Turned on again in the middle of the night...but hasn't shut down.
So...I've taken the plug out of the motherboard and cleaned it a little and will see if it turns off by making the power do something instead o nothing when pressed..

Thanks for all your help! Appreciated.

Cool, hopefully it's that simple! I've never swapped just a power button before, but maybe that's a good excuse to upgrade the case. :)

Hi Big Roger,
I like to know if this issue was solved, as I'm in this exact situation of yours. It's very frustrating as the PC shutdowns in the middle of work without any notice and some times turns-on itself ! Any suggestions, work-around would be extremely helpful.
Thanks!

I'd start the computer and then disconnect the power switch from the motherboard. See if that fixes it, may be a faulty switch.
