Shutting down PC properly.

Can I ruin my system by not shutting it down properly.
I sometimes get real lazy. Instead of shutting down the programs, I would just hit the power button.

So far. I have no problem. (Knock on wood) When the system boot up it will go into scan mode. I'm running win2k by the way.

technically yes.

i do it for paranioa on my main comp. on my sisters [celeron crap] i just hit the button. no problems yet.

edit: if it wasnt ok, then they wouldnt have a shutdown button, where win2k goes, shutting down system, saving settings, etc... all OS [linux, mac, unix] you need to properly shutdown. cept for dos. i dont think there was a shutdown command for dos.

I do that too sometimes. Leave it on all day long. Since the PC is in my bedroom. I want peace and quiet when I sleep. so I have to shut it down.

For the most part, there's no danger. The most I find happens when I shut off one of my computers with the power switch is the window positions don't seem to get saved.

As long as any important data isn't waiting in memory to be written back to disk, it should be no problem. Just don't turn the comp off while anything major like your 15 page essay is open and unsaved, or defragmenting your drive, or flashing your BIOS 😀

i never shut my comp off the right way, and alot of times i just shut it off in the middle of playing c-s, or quake, just pisses me of,
slow piece of sh*t
