I have 4 machines on a home lan and sharing internet acess. I just use one machine at a time. This is a 56K dialup. I have no problem connecting from the client machines but have yet figured out how to disconnect from the client machine. I set the dialup on the shareing machine to disconnect after 1 minute of inactivity and keep the dialup alive with a pinger, after shutting down the pinger on the client machine no matter where I set the disconnect threshold it still takes 5-6 minutes to disconnect the modem. Is the some other way to do this??
Thanks

Bleep: Here is how I disconnect from the Internet while at home. I use VNC to remotely control the PC with the modem and I then manually disconnect once I take control. Just add the VNC client to the Start Up folder in the Start menu and it will always load when you reboot. You can find it at ZD Net or any other d/l place.

Thanks for the reply I was looking at that the other day and I must have misunderstood the proggie. I thought it was just for a Unix machine. I will go look at it again.
Thanks again Bleep

No prob, VNC is a great little (800K for the client and the server) program. There are several different versions for differnt platforms. The remote access program is really simple to use. All you have to do is enter the IP address or the NetBios name and enter the password for that PC and you are connected. One little thing is that you must have a password on the server part of the program. It will not allow the password to be blank, security precaution.

I second the suggestion of VNC (I use it to control my mp3 machine:)). You can install it as a service in under windows9x and NT.

Another way is if you have NT you may try remote client (rClient.exe) in the resource kit.

I got the VNC up and going. The only thing I dont like is the password thing, but other than that it works fine.
Thanks

You could always do a "hard" disconnect if there is a phone near you.

I gave this some thought. What I was thinking is to make a little tone generator with the disconnect tone and putting it in the phone line by my machine with a push button to send the disconnect tone. Do you know what the disconnect tone is?
