Shutting down laptop kills wireless network

After a lot of googling, I still don't know what's going on.

My girlfriend's laptop has a Lenovo thinkpad with a RTL8192CE (supposedly?) chipset. The router we're using is an all-in-one SMC SMCD3GNV router/cable modem/etc from Comcast. The problem is that when we turn off her laptop (or hibernating/sleeping), the wireless network dies. When it dies, we can't communicate with the router anymore. When we turn the laptop back on, all is well again. I've updated the drivers, I've tried tinkering with the lenovo settings, but nothing works. Any ideas?

Im not a network person, but unless Im not understanding what you are experiencing, why are you blaming the notebook if the router disables? The first thing would be to suspect that some type of router setting needs to be changed (eg, auto signal detect) so that's where I'd be looking.
