Shuts down during boot up

My sister loaded Win2k on her laptop that originally came with win98. She said it didn't work right after that so she sent it to me. What happens is, it starts to boot and it gets to the Win2k logo where it says starting and then when the little meter gets halfway the screen goes blank. I tried the recovery disk but it won't read it on boot up so used a win95 boot disk with CD support and was able to get to DOS. I then tried to format C drive but it couldn't locate C: so I did an FDISK and check for drive or partions (Option 4) it didn't find any so I did an option one to creae one. I chose Fat 32, once I did that I rebooted and I was then able to find the C drive. I formated C: and reloaded Win2k, same problem existed. So I did the same thing over again and loaded Win98. It seems to get a little further along now but still blanks out.. Please help.....

Hmmmm.....

The first thing you may want to do is pop in the WIN2K boot disks at startup. Then, when it gives you an option, choose "R" for repair. Go ahead and choose quick repair (or whatever that other option is) and see if windows will work then. If worse comes to worse.... you can always pop in the boot disks and wipe that hard drive and have a clean WIN2k... this is all i tell you with my limited computer knowledge, but i hope this helps!

try this fdisk/mbr (do it three times at dos prompt)

then fdisk( repartition drive)

then format c:/s

(using 98 boot disk on all this)

then reinstall operating system

this should repair boot sector and mbr

hope this helps
