Shutdown while POSTing

So I just finished putting my computer together.. double checked to make sure everything was plugged in right. I turned it on and danced around for a minute in glee when it successfully turned on and started POSTing.

Then it shutdown.

So.. what could cause this? Heatsink not seated right and the CPU getting too hot? If this is the case.. I was wondering if it was normal for the Zalman Al-CU to wobble a little bit after being installed?

Specs:
Amd 3500
MSI K8N Neo2
6800 GT
Antec Neopower

I think that's about all that could be relevant.

Yes, that can cause it.

No, in general, a heatsink should be TIGHTLY secured to the processor socket.

Make sure you plugged the 3pin connector in the CPU socket, or else you'll get a CPU error. My buddy, whom I let assemble my system, put it in the case fan socket.

I actually have a friend who just had this problem. He never put any thermal paste on it, and eventually it just didn't seat right and the machine wouldn't stay on for more than a few seconds. We applied some AS3 and it worked great. 🙂

Also, try getting the system running with NO extra stuff, like cd, had drive, floppy etc. It should be able to run with just the mobo, cpu, ram, and video. Then add the CD and run memtest if you can get it to keep running without turning off...
