Shutdown question!

When I hit shutdown in this system, it goes thru and does some sutff and then a window appears "It is now safe to shutdown your computer". But, I still hear the fan running? On my other machine, when I hit shutdown, it shuts down all the way. Is this a BIOS setting or power management setting? Thanks...

Which version of windows do you have? I would say the ability to automatically power off is controlled at the BIOS, so check your BIOS > power management setting.
when the message "it is safe to shutdown your computer appears" the computer is still running that why you can still hear the fan. Push the power button to power off the system.

Has it been doing this all along? How old/new is your motherboard? What chipset? And what OS are you running?

I remember it was around 1996 or 1997 when BIOSs first started doing the auto shutdown. Before that, it was exactly as you described -- the screen would show saying "It is now safe..." and you'd have to hit the power button. But if your BIOS isn't that old, it must be something else.

I just installed WIN2K Pro on this machine.

The motherboard is one of these -> Amptron K7-810LM.

When I hit shutdown, I get the message about "it is now safe to" and the fan is still running on the machine after 5 minutes.

I looked in the BIOS under power management and it looks like most everyhting is "diabled".

Any ideas? Thanks much.

Something else must be wrong. Even when I push the power button, it is still running.

Since the motherboard controls whether the power is turned off by sending a request to the PSU, and Windows requests that power be turned off (automatically) by communicating with the motherboard.

Usually, there is an option under Power management in the BIOS, for setting power off to delay 4 seconds, off, or instantly. If all settings are correct in BIOS, check windows to make sure that its configured of ACPI (I believe)

Under Power Options in the control panel it supposed to let you turn off Windows using the physical Power button (where it will go through the proper shutdown procedure) or other modes (standby ect)

I'm guessing its a BIOS/motherboard problem.

Okay, I checked the manual for your BIOS. You may want to enable the Power Management option in the Power Management Setup section. Then you can check to see if Win2K enables Advanced Power Management. Check the control panel, power options, then the APM tab. You may want to fiddle with the options there and see what happens.
