I also have this posted in motherboards since I do not know if it is a hardware or software problem.
I just got finished building a system for a co-worker with the MSI KT333 board. Everything is fine, except it has a shutdown problems. THe OS installed is WIN98se. When told to shut down it seems like it does, then it appears to try to re-boot. I get 3 long beeps then. The only thing I can do then it pull the power plug. It boots up & runs fine, just the shutdown problem. I have turned off all possible hardware monitor functions & it still does it. I have played with every BIOS setting I can think of & it still does it.
The rest of the system is: XP1800 (non overclocked), 256MB PNY DDR RAM, Visiontek GeForce2 GTS-v, WD 40GB 7200RPM HD, SB 16 soundcard, & modem. Power supply is 350 watt. It had the problem before installing the modem & soundcard. I have underclocked the CPU & RAM, same problem. I have also downloaded the windows update patch that gives the HD 2 seconds delay on shutdown & that did not fix it also. If I tell it to go into stand-by, I have the same problem when getting out of standby.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, where in Win98se do you change the shutdown settings (I have seen other computers that will give a 'it is now safe to shut off your computer' screen, rather than shutting down. Where in 98se do you set that (it is not in the power management options)? She has some older publication software that will not run on XP, so upgrading to XP is the last resort (I'm not sure if that will work also).
