I just got finished building a system for a co-worker with the MSI KT333 board. Everything is fine, except it has a shutdown problems. THe OS installed is WIN98se. When told to shut down it seems like it does, then it appears to try to re-boot. I get 3 long beeps then. The only thing I can do then it pull the power plug. It boots up & runs fine, just the shutdown problem. I have turned off all possible hardware monitor functions & it still does it. I have played with every BIOS setting I can think of & it still does it.

The rest of the system is: XP1800 (non overclocked), 256MB PNY DDR RAM, Visiontek GeForce2 GTS-v, WD 40GB 7200RPM HD, SB 16 soundcard, & modem. Power supply is 350 watt. It had the problem before installing the modem & soundcard. I have underclocked the CPU & RAM, same problem. I have also downloaded the windows update patch that gives the HD 2 seconds delay on shutdown & that did not fix it also. If I tell it to go into stand-by, I have the same problem when getting out of standby.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, where in Win98se do you change the shutdown settings (I have seen other computers that will give a 'it is now safe to shut off your computer' screen, rather than shutting down. Where in 98se do you set that (it is not in the power management options)? She has some older publication software that will not run on XP, so upgrading to XP is the last resort (I'm not sure if that will work also).

EDIT: I have the latest 4 in one drivers installed. I have build dozens of systems & never seen this before (THis is my first time with this perticular board though. I have used the MSI KT266a board before).

I have seen this several times with win98se. It is a known issue. You can always try Microsoft's Knowledge Base about this.

2 things you can try:

1. re-install windows on top of the old windows. This has been known to fix it. DLLs get corrupted and re-installing win98se corrects the bad files.

2. Just use the video card with no other cards installed. This has worked as well. Irqs get in conflict or other resources do, and removing the other cards eliminates this. If it works then you know where the problem lies.

As Iron Woode said, Windows 98 has well-known shutdown problems that are pretty well documented in Microsoft's Knowledge Base. I suggest a quick search followed by a run of Windows Update to get the latest fixes and patches. Your problem has nothing to do with the board (one that I also have and that I'm loving).

I have installed win98se on over 25 systems & have never encountered this before. I have used all the parts in this system in other systems (other than the MB) without a problem. This is why I'm not certain if it is a hardware or software issue. I have some pages printed out off the MS site that I'll try.

Iron Woode, On the initial install, I only had the videocard installed. It had the problem before I added any other cards, so I do not think it is an IRQ problem. All other aspects of the system (startup- running) work just fine.

UPDATE: I finally tracked it down.

After trying every BIOS & windows trick I could think of & upgrading it to XP PRO, it still would not shut down. After swaping in almost every part from my system (Shuttle AK31a, XP1700, GeForce 4 4200, 265 DDR, etc...) but the MB, floppy, HD & CD-ROM into it without any results, I tried switching power supplies. That did the trick. I put in my cheap CompUSA 300watt supply from my system & it worked without a hitch. The 350 watt that was causing problems with the MSI board, had no problems with my Shuttle board. It appears that this MSI board is real pickey about its power.
