After my computer had been running a while, it doesn't shutdown properly. It either reboots instead of turning off, or it crashes on the windows shutdown screen (and the screen is all scrambled up...the clouds picture is completely scrambled. I can tell what it is by the color).

Its starting to get really annoying. anyone know what it might be?

try this start > programs > accessories > system tools > system info. then under the tools menu, select system config utility. click on the advanced button under the General tab, and check the box next to Disable fast shutdown.
my comp used to lock up at the shutdown screen all the time after i installed a nic card, until i did that

OK...this is why... from MS site:

The Microsoft System Configuration utility includes an option to disable Fast Shutdown. If this option is unchecked in Windows 98 Second Edition, your system may reboot instead of shutting down. To resolve this issue, change the FastReboot value data from 1 to 0 in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Shutdown
NOTE: When you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement, which addresses shutdown issues, the Disable Fast Shutdown option is no longer listed on the Advanced tab in Msconfig.

so that means its already set to "0". (it is...i checked the registry). So I guess that is not the problem. ARGH!!!
