Shutdown problem -- Win 2K

am running an Athlon 800mhz with 320mb ram and 160gb hard drive space...Whenever I try and shutdown my computer restarts instead...I have reformatted several times but same thing...

I know of several emachines users who have the same exact problem. Now, I don't mean to insult your machine, so don't take that the wrong way.
The emachine issue has been traced to bad power supplies. We even have an emachine at work here that does the same thing. It runs fine except for the restart instead of shutdown thing. No BIOS settings will fix it or make it work properly, but you can try.
What power supply do you have?

I have a 300 watt power supply and its a system I built and it only happens in win 2k...

There are known issues with Athlons and Win2k. Microsoft has released a patch and it is the first patch listed at the Athlon? Processor System Configuration Recommendations page.

I had the same problem in Win2k with my old Athlon that gaudiello is having and this patch cleaned it right up.
