Hi everyone!

I am having a problem when my PC powers down. I click shutdown in win xp pro. Everything powers down but then the lights for power HD, and CDROM stay on. Then, if I try to power up using the front power swicth, the PC won't boot.

I can get the PC to boot if after I power down, I also turn off the power using the power supply switch in the back. This, of course, fully shuts down the PC. Then when I turn the back power swicth on, and then hit the front power switch everything boots up normally. But there is one other odd behavior. When I turn on the back power switch (before the PC boots up) the lights for power, HD, and CDROM turn on, even though the PC hasn't even started the boot process.

It might help to understand some of the changes I have made to my system recently. It all started when I decided to replace the CPU fan and the northbridge fan in order to reduce noise. After replacing both fans, I could not get the PC to boot. After hours of trying everything I could think of, I decided to try replacing the power supply. This partially fixed the problem. With the new power supply, I can now boot using the workaround process I described in the paragraph above.

My system specs:

gigabyte ga-8iexp motherboard (845e chipset)
p4 2.53 processor
512 mb pc2700 samsung ram
antec 330w true power supply
antec case
geforce2 video
onboard lan
onboard sound
wd 80gb hdd
48x lite-on rd-rw
win xp

replacement Vantec northbridge fan
replacement Zalman CPU fan
replacement 330w true power supply

Any suggestions / comments from all the experts out there would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dave

Welcome to Anand first of all, second I had the same problem, well sort of with my starting, shutting down, when I replaced my Heatsink on my Rig. It wouldn't boot at all with a different heatsink. How powerful is the fan that you have? IF it draws enough wattage, it might be stressing the fan header too much. Also do you have the latest version of your bios?

I had to change back to my stock hsf, until I replaced it with a volcano 9, and haven't had any problems since.

Strange problem that changing your HS can make the whole puter act like that. Mine wouldn't boot at all with first replacement I had.
