SHTF, are you prepared? Are you planning? Do you care?

Most of the other forums I frequent are populated by somewhat, well, "on the edge" kind of people ranging from "Need to be prepared for a bad snow storm" to "The world is fvcking end man!! Prepare or die!". So, seeing as this isnt a gun/survival related forum I figured I could get a good feel for how prepared the "normal" people are (And lemme tell ya, I use "normal" looselt with you kats 😉 )
So, made a poll. If you want to elaborate thats fine too.

EDIT:
Forgot to add, for my preperations the world could flat out cease to be for 1 week and I wouldnt be too phased. Hopefully by the end of this summer I will be fully stocked and will be prepared for a "event" lasting up to 1 year.
In other words, I could make it a year without outside help, although it would be crappy after the first few months.

So what is SHTF again?

Sh1t Hit The Fan

Depends on your mindset. Ranging from a bad snow storm which puts you out of power for a few days in freezing tempatures to a terrorist attack such as a dirty bomb which shuts down a portion of the city up to full on TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We know It)

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!

I'm trying to see if "Joe Average" prepares for even something as simple as being without power for 2 days cause of a snowstorm.
Seeing as the other forums I'm on are rather survivalist oriented, they dont make good places to do a poll to see if people are prepared. 😉

We don't have power failures. It is actually predicted that the chance of getting a blackout is so remote, well we don't think about it.

I didn't vote because preparation is futile.

That's "resistance is futile", HappyPuppy.
"Be prepared" is the Boy Scout's motto.
You got em all mixed up, you might need a nap?

What's in your B.O.B. Spec Op?

The BOB is still a work in progress in the infant stages. having 3 kids, 8 4 and 2 makes it very difficult to really bug out. So, I'm more of a bug in kinda guy, although I do have plans and supplies to get us from the city 500 miles back to the farm if needed. But, right now I'm focusing on bug in rather then bug out, and bug out would come only under the most extreme of conditions.
But, I AM going to make a BOB just in case. First though is the bug in preps.

Anyways, nine is going to be modelled after one of these.

Complete BOB

there's a blizzard outside and no, I'm not really ready. heh.

by the time I get out of work, all the parking in my neighborhood will likely be taken, so I'll be parking 4-5 blocks away from my apartment. I do have some winter gear in the trunk of my car, though -- snow boots (warm to -40F + waterproof), wool gloves, a wool hat with ear flaps, and a wool scarf. I'm not too worried about the cold.

but driving home on unplowed roads could potentially suck, and there's no real food in my apartment. I'm looking at either: a) snagging a frozen dinner from my roommate, b) eating a pot of rice for dinner + lunch tomorrow, or c) dropping by a local deli and picking up a sandwich and some donuts to eat for breakfast (assumes the roads aren't too bad).

I'm usually more on my game, though. last blizzard we had, I totally stocked on food (though stocking up for me = 2-3 days of food... generally speaking, I prefer to go to the grocery store every couple days and always be eating fresh food, rather than buying food for weeks at a time and freezing it).

edit: in conclusion, no. I'm definitely not one of those people who totally prepare for the end of the world. I have a couple bags of rice that I keep around for emergency food, but that's about it. if we lost running water, I'd be totally screwed. I could go to my parents' house, though... they live about 2 miles away. my dad is a compulsive shopper, so our basement is on par with a grocery store.

No yelling, cabin boy.

You would be YELLING if you had a big ass friggin' HORSE FLY buzzing around. Damn thing is extremely evasive. Back home we have things that would get rid of such pestilence immediately. Now we have to deal with this in strange ways.

Oh great! My wife has just informed me that someone is bringing me a vacuum cleaner. Now this could actually be funny!

I could easily survive for a month here with no electricity and without leaving home.

You have food and water for a month?

1500 gallons of potable water, several cords of firewood, enough food to last a long long time (including a freezer full of beef we raised ourselves and chickens for eggs.) A generator to run for periods to keep the freezer cold. If I had a bit more in the pantry and more gas, I could last a year up here easily (not talking about my sanity though, heh).

How is sanitised?

Do you regularly monitor ORP levels?

It's part of our well system. We trickle feed the tank, so it's continually refreshed as we use out of it. We shock the well/tank with chlorine every few months to ensure the system is clean.

Alcohol
candles
matches
28 cases of gatorade
electronic football board
box of aa batteries
estimated 90lbs of target clearance candy
