Shredder purchase advice?

Search gave some pretty weak results and there doesn't seem to be a good subforum to ask this so...

The last two shredders we had at home croaked without a terrible amount of use (stripped gears). Any suggestions on a reasonably-priced shredder that will survive the occasional too-many-pages-inserted problem? TIA!

Just buy a lighter... I've done mass shredding at work, and they always overheat or die after a month. We went through 3 $200 shredders in less than a year once. Looks like you already know about that.

I've been quite happy with this one, though I've only had it for 6 months. Quiet, the output is like sawdust, & it's quite forgiving about over-feeding it.

If I had a fireplace I'd consider it.

Looks nice. $200 is a bit out of budget (like 2x). Long story short, SIL is supposed to get one for us for Xmas, you see.

That's the one I have as well, had it almost a year now. It does have a thermal shut off that will go off when you feed it too much at one time. I seem to always do shredding in large piles, so I tend to overheat them. Last to shredders essentially burned up :).

You can find them on sale sometimes, or with rebates at Staples.

I wonder if lesser models (e.g. cross-cut, no micro-cut) have similar features such as "doesn't blow-up after a year" (which Drako seems to indicate is a feature of the $200 model). I'll have to investigate!

Nah, you don't need a shredder like that. Anyone can shred documents just as easily on the stovetop. :p
