Showstopping Bug Delays Windows Vista RTM

Microsoft was forced to delay the release of the final version of Windows Vista to manufacturers due to a bug found in the final stretch of testing. IDG News quotes a tester who revealed that the bug "would totally crash the system, requiring a complete reinstall."
According to DigiTimes, Vista build version 5824 reduced the bug count from from 1450 to around 500 since the second release candidate and was set for RTM (release to manufacturing) on October 25 before the bug was uncovered.

The bug was squashed a week after its discovery and the revised final build for RTM is numbered 5840. It is believed that the 5840 build has been in testing for nearly a week now. There is no mention, however, of the 499 other bugs which may remain alive and well.

The setback has pushed Vista's RTM date to November 8, exactly two weeks after the originally intended date. The two-week delay is not expected to alter plans for the operating system's debut in January, 2007.

Microsoft recently announced its official plans to offer discounted upgrades to those who purchase a PC pre-loaded with Windows during the holiday season.

i for one find it appalling that MS is OK with releasing a new "revolutionary" OS with "only" 499 bugs... wtf!!!!
sure its MS and there will be bugs and a SP1 ANYWAY!! but there's no need to ship it with known bugs... many more will crop up with time....
wtf eh

If they released a perfect product (say XP was perfect) there wouldn't be any incentive or very very little to upgrade.

Wow RTm with on 499 bugs still reported in the program. They really need to start pulling it the bucks on this and charge us $200+ a pop to own it with 499 bugs still in it that can do who knows what ;)
And why? Because people will still buy it, thats why buggy or not, start taking in cash on the suckers and worry about the other 499 bugs later that can be patched asap.

come to think of it... how much will Vista cost? like say the most expensive ultimate edition?

can anyone calculate the dollar price per bug that will be charged for vista? :D

I still think that is a deplorable practice to release a product with known problems. The people's incentive to upgrade shouldn't be fueled by a bug fix. It should be fueled by a superior product that makes it worth upgrading. I know no software will ever be bug free, but 499 known? GEEZ!!! I'm not sure who is worse, Microsft or Blizzard...

499 bugs is pretty good for BETA software

i mean really... NOBODY is gonna rush out and buy this.... maybe a handful but definitely not the large companies that MS is aiming for... its been in the works for like what 6 years?

and now suddenly it HAS to be out before the end of the year??? WHY????!!!!!!

man this is so retarded. can't they just wait a couple more months until its more stable, optimized, has more 3rd party software developed for it and actually has 0 or close to 0 known bugs?

software doesn't have to be perfect and that's pretty tough to accomplish specially with such an intricate and complex piece of software... but really that's just pitiful in my opinion...

edit: IMO this is EXACTLY what makes Google so much of a better company than Microsoft. And they are arguably just as evil (despite the motto).

I read an article about software development @ Google and they have no deadlines... and they don't rush anything... sure they don't make huge operating systems that 95% of the world uses but still... they believe in releasing software once its ready, not rushing it to try and make more money...

Honestly!!! Those ppl that haven't switched to OSX or Linux by now prolly won't for a while either... there is NO HURRY!!! arghhhhhh :|

same philosophy as EA... who has an entire year to release the next iteration of "RANDOMSPORT 200x" and still rushes out a buggy piece of crap

You're welcome to create your own bug free OS. In fact, I think you should give it a shot and report back.

(there are little reasons to upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, but XP was cheaper than 2000 when Microsoft sold both)

Dood xp is almost perfect and everyone has basicaly come to use it for too long. They need another buggy one out there to make money on, make you think you need, stop suporting forcing you to upgrade, and do it soon because they are loosing money every day that bugged up POS doesnt hit the market.

And I love it because I cant upgre to it if I wanted to without buying a different sound card or use the on board crappy stuff because Hercules ATM (and doubtful they will) doesnt have a Vista driver for the Firewire or XP Theater cards. I hate SB sound cards and my on board blows compaierd to the two I got but at some point Im going to be forced into Vista and a new sound cards. I dont know about the RTM version but because of my sound cards and driver I couldnt install the Beta version and I would assume the RTM will do the same telling me I will need updated drivers or new cards for it to make it work.

Going to me funny though when it is released. For alot I would think that thier older onboard graphics cards wont be able to handle it forcing them into a upgrade (oh maybe another reason to get it out soon before christmas to drive up new computer sales) and wont know this till they get it home and try to install it and get the message screen that this that and the other has failed and will not continue the install.

This is just about the dumbest thing I've read someone write about Vista yet. Congratulations, you managed to surpass the OP.

Yes. Less bugs would have been even better.
Anyway, as long as Microsoft decided for a delivery date, there will be bugs in the operating system when delivering. The hope is that there are little (or no) bugs that would affect the security of the system (operating system and user data/configurations/...).

WFS has been cancelled long ago.

DX10? meh... They're releasing a new DX9 from what I've heared.

Wait so your telling me people go out and buy the crap, find out it doesnt work because of out dated hardware, wont drive computer sales especially at christmas time when they have heard thier SO complain for the last few months that the Vista they just paid a crap load (or beta and plan on getting Vista for christmas) for and cant return because they opened it, will not in any way effect computer sales?

Oh no, you bought the software and opened it so Best buy isnt going to take it back. You paid $$$$$ bucks for it. Your computer sux and wont install what you paid $$$$$ bucks for, and at chirstmas when people are giving to one another and had it hearing from you about how Vista and best buy sux becuse it cant be returned wont be prompted into buying a $499 dell for that person for chrstmas, or Johnny new hardware. Nope not one bit can I see how computer sales, because of Vista, wont go up any at all this christmas over last :p

And if you still think this comment is stupid you have a problem thinking outside the box and if I had money would place bets that if it does make it out before christmas, this year, will be the most computers (or add on hardware for that matter) sold with its help.

anyway, they can't fix every single bug. Vista is already with a delay of several years. hopefully they'll fix it quickly though.

I'm not even going to attempt to decipher that rambling mess of a reply.
Here's a few things you should know:
1) Vista will not be released until January 07, so whatever it is you're saying about Christmas in that gibberish is pointless. You would know this if you read the OP's link.
2) Users with integrated graphics will not "get the message screen that this that and the other has failed and will not continue the install." Vista installs and runs fine on systems with integrated graphics.

<------ Software Engineer (although not my day job...)

At any rate, 499 bugs for 50 million lines of code isn't that terrible. And you don't even know the nature of the bugs. For all you know one of the bugs could be that Windows Calculator crashes when you try to divide by zero twenty seven times in a row. There may be a memory leak with solitaire and that 2 MB stays resident even after closing the program. You get the idea.

There are software glitches, and there are show stoppers. It is important to know the difference between the two because minor glitches may only affect a minority of the population on occasion.

Please, if you have never written any software (I'm not just talking about "Hello, World!" or whatever you did in your introduction to C class) then don't comment on how terrible it is to have 500 bugs.

Agreed. But you better pickup a torch and go along with the mob or you'll be stoned. ;)

I've actually been hearing pretty good things about Vista ever since RC1 from a couple guys here who have been playing with the beta test.
