Here is the challange, you have $300 to spend on parts and build a computer. To keep things even you have to do all of your shopping at Newegg.com . Intel or AMD, it does not matter. A fast video card is nice but Intergrated video is acceptable too. And Windows XP must be included in the price, so make that the first thing on your shopping list. It also must include a keyboard mouse, optical drive, and floppy.

Also the total cost must be under $300 before rebates. But rebates do count as bonus points, so try to find them if you can. Shipping However is not part of the $300 budget, so do not worry about that.

Challange number two:
Build a PC for $500 that can beat any current dell selling for $499-500. It must come with a monitor
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/...aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DE310RF1&s=dhs

Challange number three:
Build a PC that can beat an emachine priced at $549.
http://e4me.com/products/products.html?prod=T6420

The more RAM you have installed the more points you score. 128MB just does not cut it. 512MB is ideal but if you have gone over budget then 256MB will suffice.

Start here, choose Media Center, Professional, or Home

With $2.98 to spare! I could have saved $6 by using a slower HDD but chose the 8MB cache. An Optical mouse would have been a nice upgrade but it could have thrown me off budget. Can you do any better?

As for the other 2 do your own work.

Bad link, it shows nothing in the cart. Your parts list is saved as part of your browsers cookies.

How about a Dell for $109 with XP, mouse, keyboard, etc. ?

-- LINKY --

You cannot beat Dell's prices, IF you know what you're doing. ;)

here's my list for the $550 (vs. the eMachines)...it was pretty hard to beat and the only real benefit of my rig would be it's future proof (socket 939), used a good case, quality power supply, name-brand parts. btw, you said no rebates but the emachines is $550 after a $50 rebate....here goes:

CPU: 3200+ A64 ($160) (Socket 939)
MB: Gigabyte motherboard (Socket 939) w/GeForce 6100 built-in $70
RAM: G.Skill 1GB stick DDR400 stick ($66.25).
HDD: Seagate 40GB 7200.7 $37
Case: Cooler Master Centurion 5 $45
PSU: fortron 400w ($40) or a small antec i would say.
Optical: NEC DVD burner $36

Keyboard/Mouse: the ones Googer has in the newegg shopping cart list - $8.25 for both
Windows XP $88

all this for $551....if you wanna bother me about the $1, use this ram...it's 2x512mb DDR400 G.Skill CL 2.5 ram. it saved $2.25, meaning there's $1.25 left over.

this can also be matched up against the dell...get a crap case/power supply combo for $40 and you're there. for the monitor, go to a garage sale and pick up a CRT for free. if it's matched against the dell, well then....my s939 3200+ vs. p4 2.8....my 1gb vs. 512mb ram....my 40gb vs. 80gb :(.....my DVD burner vs. DVD burner...my onboard 6100 vs Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900....i think i win :D

The Emachine has a 3400+ but you managed to score a 3200+. Very nice try. The T6420 3400+ Socket 754 replaced the Socket 939 3500+ based T6524 with 1GB of ram for the same price. That was a machine that I bet no one could beat at $500

googer, if i remember correctly, the s754 3400 newcastle didn't OC all too well. at least not as well as the 3200 venice does. plus, i would prefer a s939 cpu clocked 200MHz slower than a s754 cpu. it's more "future proof" ;)

and u said $500? the emachines is $550 :p . true, i guess they have a faster stock cpu but i would still prefer my build but oh well. it's not like this was a real competition...and i'm sure emachines isn't limited to newegg only.

i like this topic...maybe you should add some more price levels

I am glad you enjoy this topic, the goal find low cost systems for people on super tight Mc Budgets.

I have been thinking of opening it up to outside sites or etailers. The only catch might be that you cannot use ebay. I will still keep my newegg.com rule but a twist is being added: You must first source or shop for all parts on newegg.com then go online and find the same part for less from a competitor to newegg.com.

Example:
A)
Brand X CPU $75 @newegg.com ($2.99 Shipping)
Brand X CPU $75 @zipzoomfly.com (Free Shipping)

Remember that shipping is not part of the $300 budget but free shipping or a reduced rate acts just like a rebate, you get bonus points for each 1¢ you save on rebates or s+h. But you must find the part on newegg.com first and list that in your posting.
