I'm currently studying abroad in Australia and having my parents sell my Grand Cherokee while I'm gone. I just got word that it's practically sold, and I'm set on buying a 99-04 Jetta or Golf. It'll either have the TDI or the 1.8T -- I haven't decided if it's worth the extra $2-3k to get a TDI. I'm set on these because I spent a week (and about 1000 miles) driving my parents' '04.5 Jetta GLS with the TDI. I loved it..it was smooth, responsive, comfy, and quiet.

Anyhow, show me yours. :)

I've got a 2000 1.8T Jetta. Not too terribly bad, at least from what I've heard of other's experiences. Decent performance and comfort for the price.

Spring for the R32 if you get a chance though. Fun drive. :D

My brother has a 04 GLI VR6. Tons of zip. That car will fly. Way too small for my tastes, though. I love my Mazda6.

Why do you say this?

I'd imagine he said it because the 1.8T makes Jaguars from the 70's seem reliable. There are plenty of previous owners on this board who can chime in with their personal horror stories.

taken care of properly, the 1.8T is solid. my brother has a 2002 A4 1.8T that is rock solid. my 99 Passat 1.8T hasn't had that much trouble either.

My roomate had one last year untill he ditched it for a new accord. Here is a list of repairs required over the time he purchased it:

Blown turbo (1k miles out of warranty)
Coil pack blew 2-3 times stranding us 2 hours from home once.
Burned through about a quart every 1k miles, VW said it was normal
check engine light would go on and off, would pull no codes when connected to OBDII scanner
etc

That generation of VW was just horrible in general

the Mk5 are a lot better but with a bigger cost in money.

nothing wrong with a 1.8T if taken care of properly. all repairs are EASY to do. coil packs... are right on top. remove the engine cover and a couple of hex or 10mm pending on what year and just pull them out.

coils packs were a issue but thats because of the vendor, they made bad ones. newer updated ones were better. the check engine light probaly due to random misfires, but your OBD2 scanner might not be able to read a VW fault. thats when you need VAG-COM.

oil burning... well i dont have reasons for that i never owned a VW just worked on them for a year.

TDI motors are great, glow plugs, oil changes and timing belts are what 90% of owners need. Well that on the EGR cleaning every 50k or so, due to carbon build up. Great motors, i would get one but cost of diesal and etc. I rather pocket the 2k extra and get the 1.8T in GTI form. Love my hatchies!

THis is my current philosophy. I was intent on getting a TDI and then realzed it'd take 4-5 years to pay off he premium with fuel savings.

You guys talking about poor reliability are the only ones who I've heard it from. A bit surprising really. Also, I ride a mid-80s Harley, so maintenance is nothing new to me. ;)

Are you serious that you have never heard negative about VWs reliability outside of AT? Does that mean you really didn't research anywhere else?

Even GTI owners on a GTI enthusiast forum complain about the issues: http://myfastgti.com/volkswage...-your-vw-gti-1450.html

everyone has complaints about VW and they work. their poor close in vendors, god awful design ideas and pointless computers that seem to fail.

driving feedback on the other hand might be the reasons why many dub owners keep them and get new ones. the biggest complaints are from the ones who tried a VW after owning some solid cars and then overwelmed by cost of maintence, they sell the car and never wanted another one again. I hated the mk3 designs and the mk4 was varible, some cars are solid, jetta's seem to break more then GTI's. 2.0L suck the worst, next comes 1.8Ts and Vr6 were actually a solid motor. the 3.2 Vr6 was great aside from o2 sensors. thats what i learned wrenching at a VW dealership for a year.

the windows fall, due to bad clamps on the regulators, bad design in coil packs on the 1.8t's. bad coolant sensors ( $15 fix ) 2.0L burn oil over 60k. passat fuel pump recalls, leaves you with no starts. some passats you swap out radios and CEL comes on due to interferance with CAN BUS system.

keep in mind the 2.0L i refer to is not the new 2.0T,

I left the dealership before many 2.0T hit 20k. new GTI have squeeks and rattles like most cars. But they are inside the dash and doors. the radios on the mk5 seems to fail. the EOS has plenty of water leaks. every VW has a gas cap problem involving CEL, the TSB might of been put out.

but with all that said, every car has their problems. all auto surveys stated for every 100 cars made there was aleast 70 problems with those cars, all across the board with vendors. i think last time i saw VW's were at 130/100 problems.

get what you enjoy and like, just have a spare amount of money aside for repairs or become a good DIY because you will need it , a lot of repairs are simple 30 min repairs with a basic set of tools that can run you $500 at a dealership.

I've heard of all the electrical issues (especially with Jettas), but I've never heard so many negative things about the 1.8T motor...especially after the changes made in 2002.

the 2002 introduced the newer 1.8T known as AWP motors. its had a new hydrick lifter and suppose to give you 180hp vs the 160hp.

electrical issues happen on all cars, just that on VW most of the time it requires replacement of a control module that is $200+

I have an '03 1.8T Jetta and I love it. You gotta baby the damn thing, but it's a fun, zippy car.
