Show me some Monitors that don't suck.

The last time I bought a monitor was 2007. At that time, I had to choose between a fast TN panel for FPS gaming, or an s-IPS, which would be great all around except for FPS gaming. At the time I owned a 4:3 19" TN display which was fast I suppose, but so disappointing in all other areas. I decided to choose the s-IPS, and that was the end of any serious FPS gaming for me for 3 years.

Now it is 2010, and I am hopeful that there are better products, but all I see is 16:9 TN everywhere. Apparently 16:10 died. Still the same 6-bit dithering, right? I'll admit the 120hz monitors are very appealing, but I need something that can do everything well. Is there any monitor out there yet that has a winning combination of response time and color gamut, still in a sensible price range (under $600)?

Or... will it take another 5 years before a LCD product comes out which can match a simple NEC Multisync CRT?
 
If I were you I would buy a Full HD TV for gaming or a big monitor.
I have started gaming on a 15" CRT, changed that for a 19" LCD, changed that to a 22" LCD and now own a 27" LCD. In the future I will probably buy a (O)LED TV to use as a monitor (40"+) because I simply love the 1920x1080 resolution for both gaming and watching HD content.
I currently own a Samsung P2770HD, but if you like a faster monitor go for the P2770 model.

bah, CRT are outdated POS that are a lot more flawed then people's nostalgia will let them admit... and don't hold a candle to current LCD tech.
Plasma is the direct evolution of CRT and it competes with LCD, with there being advantages and disadvantages to both, a big disadvantage of plasma being the price.
An LCD will never be as good as you want it to, but 5 years from now you will have OLED of a reasonable price and size that will beat the plasma and LCD in every conceivable way.

Mmmm. The perfect monitor would be a plasma with a reasonable pixel pitch and a badass controller that actually allows something ridiculous like 480hz input. Too bad plasmas can't be mass produced with as small of a pixel pitch as we come to expect from monitors nowadays.
 
You could get 2 monitors and use TN for gaming, and S-IPS for everything else. It's only the problem if your desk is small, like mine is...
