Currently I'm using onboard sound with my M2N-SLI and a cheap ($20) set of logitech 2.1 speakers. They're not bad for most things, but I can definitely notice the difference in this setup and what I've got in my car, or the 5.1 yamaha system in the living room.
Frankly, I don't need 5.1 sound at this computer. There's not enough space in this room to take full advantage of it. I'd like to keep it simple at 2.1, but want clarity throughout the tonal range as well as punchy, powerful and accurate bass.
My motherboard has SPDIF outs as well as a bunch of analog ports, but should I get a sound card? Are speakers the only thing that I need?
As far as usage goes, I'm a huge FPS player. I play TF2, CS:S, and Crysis online quite a bit. When I'm not gaming or watching movies, I'm listening to music through Winamp. If I need to make adjustments with an equalizer, I'll use Winamp's, as it is actually fairly powerful .
Also, space is limited, so a huge receiver and giant bookshelf speakers are likely out of the question.
Thanks in advance.
