SHOUTcast Server on a home LAN...

Hi there...

I am getting ready to setup SHOUTcast Server on my home LAN's fileserver in about 1.5 weeks (once the wireless adapters get here, grr!). Although, after reading the documentation I would like to clarify that I can do a few things with it before I go ahead and get it going...

1. Will I be able to listen to music on-demand with this? I want to be able to choose what songs I listen to (IE: just open WinAMP and create a playlist with MP3's from the fileserver, then when I click PLAY they stream to me instead of copy to ram and play...)?

2. I will be using 802.11b, so I assume that streaming is the way to go so that I minimize bandwidth usage, am I correct?

3. If I can't listen to stuff on demand remotely, as in Question 1, what are my alternatives?

Thanks! And suggestions are appreciated... for Windows 2000 Server... :D

Best Regards,

streaming is exactly like the radio stations in your car. tune in, and listen to their playlist, not yours. the only way i know of to accomplish what you want is to log into the server via VNC/Terminal Services, build your playlist, then begin the streaming. after that any computer on the network can listen into that stream.

yes, you will use less bandwidth by streaming. how much less? depends on the stream you use (6kbs, etc.).

Hmm, thanks!

That isn't exactly what I was hoping it would do, so I guess I will just play them right over the network and hope for the best... :(

Thanks again!

What i found was good when i wanted to listen to MP3s over a network, is to share the folder on the fileserver, and add that directory to the playlists in WinAmp on each of the computers you want to listen to music on. Then, when you play it, it will play it over the network, streaming it like you would do playing it off your own HDD. This way you can change tracks to whatever you want.

The bandwidth usage is minimal, 128-256kbps out of 11mbps, there will be no noticable "loss of bandwidth" like when you copy whole files at once.

i have even watched a DivX movie over a 10mbps network connection, perfectly.

If you want a very nice mp3 streaming system, check out RIMPS.
I'm not sure how easy it is to install on win2K, since I use linux. It is a web based
mp3 search engine playlist maker. It works very well and has a login, password setup
for multiple users. I use it both at home on my LAN and at work. Granted the 128kbps stream
chews up a bit of bandwidth.

By the way this is an on demand system. Each user picks the music they want to listen to.
You choose any song you want and start it playing whenever you want, including creating
multiple playlists.
