Shouldn't my new CD player sound better than my old one?

I just got a new sony portable CD player (same as my 2 year-old one) and it doesn't sound as good as the old one. The bass is too loud and uneven and just doesn't sound as clear. I thought it might be because I use cdr discs, but I got the same results with a real CD. Anyone else have this problem with new CD players? Is there some sort of break-in process I need to go through, maybe I need better headphones? Thx.

OK, first point. "I thought it might be because I use cdr discs, but I got the same results with a real CD"
Please explain how the disc type would affect frequency response in a digital format.

OK, second point. MiniDisc. :)

<< they probably cut down on the amp to save $$$ with the newer model... >>

Yeah that's what I'm thinking cause the bass on a lot of the new sony discman sucks sh*t. Oh well I'll just stick with my old one and give my new one to somebody.

Cost cutting. Businesses exist to make money. If they can get away with selling crappier stuff, they will. Sony has alot of brand recognition, even though often times, it's undeserved. As such, they can cut corners here and there, and still move out their products.
