Shouldn't I be able to push my E4300 to 3ghz no problem?

I have an Asus P5N32-SLI motherboard with an E4300.. Most I can get it to stable is 2.7ghz.. and even then, I have to raise the cpu voltage.

I thought almost all E4300s can be pushed to 3ghz on stock voltage.. am I wrong about this?

I am running my ram at stock speeds of 800mhz, 4, 4, 3, 5 (G.Skill brand)


I had my core fairly stable at 3ghz, but it was getting really hot.. saying 75C running Orthos for a few minutes. But the same temperature program was saying 'Tjunction' as 100C.. Does this mean I have a little more headroom in terms of cpu temperature since it may be reported wrong?

I'm using stock cooling.. since I thought the E4300 was almost a sure thing at 3ghz, stock voltage and fan..

The Arctic Cooler 7 is a nice CPU fan upgrade for less than $25, I'm not sure if your boards has active or passive cooling on the N/S bridges, but these areas may make the difference. 2.7 still isn't too bad for what these chips are selling for. I think I'm going for the E4500 once the price settles, it should be a near lock for a stable 3.0

3Ghz yes. Stock voltage and fan no. Well, apparently no for your chip. They're all a little different.

You don't need a GREAT cooler, but you need better than stock, as your 75C load temps tells you. I would be happier sub 50C personally - but I am most comfortable with AMD chips, and I believe anything under 60C can be considered a safe temp for these C2Ds. Tjunction is not something you need to worry about. It determines how the temperature is measured, not how hot the chip can get.

In overclocking, I try not to shoot for Ghz so much, because the chip will be different, but I buy a cooler than can handle as much as I want to throw at it for voltage, and then pick what I consider to be a sane voltage and then see how far that gets me on my OC. Depending on what temps I get, I will adjust my OC so that I feel comfortable with the speed and voltage and heat as a package.

I would never pick stock volts as my max OC voltage. I would say 1.45v would be not too much volts for your chip (WITH A GOOD COOLER), but should be more than enough to catapult you past the magic 3Ghz mark with sub-60C loads. DO NOT TRY THAT WITH STOCK COOLING. You need heatpipes.

Anyway, if you think there is a real problem with your temps at stock volts and that OC, you may consider re-mounting your cooler. I am reluctant to mention this b/c I believe you will be much better served by a much better cooler, but you could try to take it off and remount it and make sure it is mounted correctly. A bad mount can result in very bad temps.

Use CPUz to verify actual speed of RAM. Use Memtest to check RAM. E4300 with L2 stepping should hit 3GHz with 1.4Vcore. That board with the 590 chipset is not a fantastic overclocker. People need to understand most Asus products are way overpriced. E-mail support doesn't exist.

There's something in here that doesn't sound right. Most E4300 should hit 3, but I would say get a Arctic freezer 7 pro or something better than stock first. I have heard some people getting too high temp from there OC due to the lack of cooling. So get a better HSF first. You OC problem might just be you are pushing the temperature envelop. Once that's done you might just be able to dial it straight up or pass 3.
