Is it expected to tip a buffet? I typically do, but I got into a discussion about this today. What do you think?

I do. But not 15%. I mean, they bring you coffee and the check, but there's really no "service." I have to go get my own food.

I even tip at Sonic, but at least they bring it out to my car. :D

I don't know. them bringing food takes 30 seconds. taking your order, another 30 seconds.

When I'm in a "regular" restaurant, I tip based on how often my drink stays full, and how attentive my server is. some restaurants there are runners that bring the food out, so you're not tipping the waiter based on that to begin with.

A buck or two per person typically. This is at a place where the only thing they do is clear the table at the end.

I hate it when I pick up food from a place that normally delivers (such as a pizza place). I always feel guilty writing in $0.00 for the tip section.

Wonder what they get paid? Most waiters/waitress make like $3 hr. then figure in tips.
If that?s the same at a buffet, they deserve the standard. If they are paid more, then a few $$$ would do.

BTW, where or how is it waiters only get less than minimum???
Never made sense to me. So they might get $7 or more an hour + tips.
Why would that be considered over paid?

Probably, since so many upper class and mob run restaurants, they got congress to nix the min wage guidelines for waiters? Seems really strange.

Out in L.V. a waitress told me she was union and made $10 hr. before tips (in one of the casino restaurants). Only because she was union did she make $10 hr. before tips.

Many people dont realize waiters get much less than the min wage per hour (not including tips). So someone leaves a dollar (or less) thinking these people get paid a good wage already, right? Not so.

Why would you tip at a buffet? They don't have anyone that does anything. They clear off plates when you leave. That's pretty much it.

courtesy? some would come and clear off used plates while you're still dining, and some places even refill your drinks.

That's called "their job description" for which they receive a paycheck, and this silly thing called "customer service" --the latter of which seems to be lost on most folks now-a-days.

I tip, I thought it was the norm, they have to bring me new drinks every so often and clear my dirty plates.

I tip zero. I only tip people for jobs that I can't do myself. I tip my proctologist.

I do at casino buffets because even though they're just bringing refills, those ladies work harder than most waitresses.

Sure, but don't expect good repeat service.
