Should you tell your boss you are looking for another job?

To make a long story short my girlfriend is not getting a position that was promised to her a couple months ago. As it turns out, the people doing the promising had no authority to hire or fire. She took an entry level job with the understanding that she would move into a higher position once a certain person left. This person's last day is tomorrow so my girlfriend talked to the boss on Monday and said would like to have the vacant position. The boss said she would take it under consideration which basically means no to me. My gf will ask the boss tomorrow is she is going to get the job and if she doesn't, she will look for a new one. My gf has done great work in her current position and has been commended on several occasions. Should she tell the boss her intentions or just look for a job and give her 2 weeks when she finds one?

She should just look for a new job. If she finds a good one, she can then go to her boss with a far, far stronger negotiating position.

you only play that card when you have something else already lined up.

best case?
Maybe, just, maybe they want to keep her and promote her. But given that they didn't already promote her that doesn't seem possible otherwise it would already be done.

worst case?
no job. I mean c'mon...you're basically saying "I don't want to work here anymore"

Negotiations rule #1 - don't call if you don't have the cards.
#2 - bluff, but it better have some backup...don't threaten unless you truly can and will switch
#3 - anybody can be replaced

She should tell her boss she is looking for a new job only if she desires to be fired. ;)

Heh. Exactly.

Would her employer tell her if they were gonna $#&%can her?

Likely not.

You should never tell your employer if you are trying to get a new job. You might get fired. If not, they'll likely make sure to lay you off first the next time the company does poorly, regardless of if you ever got that new job or not.

I have no intentions of telling my current employer I have begun looking for a new job. They won't even know I landed a new job until I call off on a Monday and tell them to mail me my check because I'm never coming back. :)

i'm in the same situation. currently looking for another job. i enjoyed working at my current place but the commute is too far and i've done it for too long. i figure when i do find another job, i'll give them two week notice. that way i leave on good terms and won't burn my bridges.
