I think I just screwed up my first date with a girl mentioning it. I asked about her passed relationship, then she asked about mine. Should of not asked...

Later in the date she asked me how she compares to my old girlfriend and I said....
AHHHHHHHHHHHhhh!!!

i think its ok to have a bit of background info.
i certainly wouldnt make it a recurrent theme in the relationship.

Limit it to generic things like ... length ... location ... long distance or not ...

but don't sit there and bad mouth her ... and heaven forbid you say you're still friends ...

Sure why not...

Just don't lie to try to get her to like you more...the truth always comes out eventually..and if she finds out you lied..then you're even more screwed than telling her something that's true that she might not like.

Maybe I am insecure but I became very upset when a date told me how much she loved her ex and how many sacrifices she made for him. I began to feel she could never love me that way and ruin a promising relationship.

Its nice to know the background but try not to bring it up again unless both of you feel comfortable talking about it.

Hah.

I guess I was trying to lead her to the point that I did not have many relationships in the past.

NO! Never - ever!
(unless you have some "baggage" from the last one you are carrying - like HIV+) ;)

and then NOT on the first date

So how did you answer that? Did you come up with something good like "oh you're much prettier"?

I like to whisper pointers while in the heat of moment. "Yeah, that's nice, but my ex did it like..."
