Should you clear cmos when swapping memory sticks?

I have to swap memory sticks in a system and am wondering if I should clear the cmos or just enter the bios and load optimized defaults?

Thanks

It depends. Are the memory kits or modules in question of the same manufacture? Do they have the same SPD specs -- including the voltage and latencies? If so, I would think you could simply swap the modules -- maybe enter the BIOS to make sure the modules are recognized with the proper size.

If not, then go into BIOS and load the optimized defaults. I've done that sort of thing plenty of times, and I never did anything so drastic as clearing the CMOS.

never heard of that and never did it in all my 15 years of upgrading computers. just swap and enjoy.

Only necessary if you've manually set timings/speed that your new memory isn't capable of.

No issue with auto, as SPD is polled on every boot.

The new sticks are in no way similar. I'm not sure how the originals were set up. I'll just go into the bios and set it to auto and then adjust if necessary. I just didn't want to get into a situation where the machine wouldn't boot.

Thanks,
BGC
