am taking a class in which i will build computer... am obligated to use these parts... us students received this quote--- should this system cost $900?

1) 1.6G Intel P4 478 pin CPU
2) ECS P4-VXASD2 motherboard
3) 256 meg DDRAM (brand not given)
4) 300 watt ATX mid-tower case UL P4 PS (brand not given)
5) 30 Gig Samsung ATA/100 hard-drive
6) Liteon DVD ROM
7) 32 MEG NVIDIA TNT 2-chip graphics card

And the usual: floppy/modem/network card/keyboard/mouse/3 piece speakers with sub/Windows 2000 Pro OEM

No monitor included

Anyway, I went to newegg and priced the parts as best I can at around $650, and if i go with Windows XP Home, that's another $100. Any suggestions? Is the $900 a bit high, or about right??

that seems pretty high to me, like Dr. Smooth said you could probab;y find each part for much cheaper.

BTW you should really put a better video card than a tnt2 on a 1.6 Ghz processor, a geforce 2 or 3 would be nice...

Hmm i'd say that is a fair price and would be a good profit for the builder.

I didn't know Samsung made HDs. How do they preform? Tell your teacher that a TNT2 doesnt go with a 1.6 P4... GF2,GF3, Radeon 7500 or Radeon 8500 sounds more like it.

I've got a 40gb samsung hdd... the stats on the thing sucks, but it actually runs really nice for what it is... it's only 5400 rpm, and only has half a mb of cache, but with HDTach it shows up as an average throughput of 33.something MB/s, which seems to be pretty high for a 5400 RPM drive

thanks for the replies-- maybe i wasn't clear-- I am going to build the computer myself for a class i am taking...but am obligated to buy these parts from a particular vendor-- the price quoted from this vendor is $900 not including tax or monitor... i am wondering if thats a good price or would i be better to go to instructor and ask whether i can go with a different vendor.

You have to buy from "THAT" vendor?? Seems fishy to me. Tell them you want to take the class, but you don't want to pay $900 for $600 worth of parts.

maybe your teacher has some contract with the vendor, he probably pockets half of their profit:)
tell your teacher his deal sounds fishy, ask him if he is indeed doing this for his own profit

the only problem with that it the nforce board can't take advantage of it's dual channel memory without two dimms...... that effectively means you have an nforce220 board:(

easy way to fix that tho:) buy another 256mb stick:D

Most likely it is the school with a contract to only buy from a certain vendor.
