Should this have killed my friend?

I recently found out that a good female friend of mine tried to commit suicide a couple years back. Apparently she took numerous doses of cough medicines, prozak, blood pressure medication, tylenol, aspirin, and MANY other kinds of medication that she can't remember.

She got very sick the night she took them, vomiting, dizziness, etc. Somehow she feel asleep that night, and woke up in the morning. Is she lucky to be alive today? Should this amount of medication have killed her?

If she vomited it's possible she forced most of it out her stomach before it could get into her system.

Hence, she would not die.

Sorry. :(

I thought it would be okay to joke around since your friend is obviously fine today...

The vomiting may have saved her. Other then that it is impossible to say if it would of killed her or not.

I hope she is doing better and has reason to live now.

StormRider,.... that was mean (are you two friends?)

but I have to agreed that vomiting would have prevented those drugs from acting up, its a real good thing that she didn't vomit while sleeping.. people have died from chocking on their own vomit

i am not a doctor, so i couldn't give my professional opinion, but I would guess that if she had not vomited, she would have died. Good think she is still alive.....:)

You would have thought that those drugs would have killed her, but by vomiting, it probably saved her.

It's hard to say, but hopefully her thoughts that drove her to take all that crap, are gone and are replaced with happy and enjoying thoughts...

This is a stupid thread i'm sorry. Really, i'm going to be honest here. Do you not know the value of life? Especially after someone has tried to kill themselves? I see no point in something like this being here, obivously i'm relatively new here, but really YES it should have killed her but medicine reacts differently to every person, and god damnit dude what's wrong with you, "Is she lucky to be alive" as opposed to being dead?

Well, I've heard that often times when people try to commit suicide, they're not into it whole heartedly. It's generally just a very desperate way to get help for themselves, whether they're fully aware of it or not. They say that's why people choose "iffy" ways of killing themselves, like overdoses, rather than more sure-fire solutions (like jumping off a building). Deep down, they're really hoping that someone will find them and help them.

Yeah, generally if someone REALLY wants to kill themselves, they'll do it. I'm thinking the vomiting probably had something to do with her surviving also. You also don't need to induce vomiting. Sometimes your body just doesn't like what you give it so it does it for you.

At least she wasn't afraid to try. Lots of girls try to overdose on stuff like that, I know a girl that took a whole bottle of asprin but she's ok. Don't be put off by the afraid to try comment, you gotta had it to her, she had some balls to do that. Of course you could say it'd be more brave to not do it but I don't think so.

I don't know if that should have killed your friend but I'm glad that she's ok. Is she seeing counseling or has a lot of supportive friends (like you)? Sorry I didn't read the entire thread.

Actually, people who try to commit suicide by overdosing on drugs usually die from suffocating on their own vomit, induced by the drugs, rather than the actual drugs. Also, women are more likely to try to commit suicide than men, but men are 3 times more likely to succeed (see, we are better ;))

Probably. Feel very lucky she's still here today.

One of my femals friends tried to kill her self last summer. Slit her wrists...... We found her and did about 175km/h (110mph) for the 15 mile drive to the hospital. We consider ourselves very lucky she's still alive.

Really it all depends on what you take. The blooc pressure medication would probably have done the most harm. But overdoses of alot of drugs will just make you sick and cause you to vomit. The reason sleeping pills are an easy way of committing suicide is because they slow down your system, enough slow your system down until you stop breathing and your heart stops. Tylenol probably doesn't do much in overdose, and aspirin would make her blood really thin so if she had then cut herself, the bleeding wouldn't have stopped. The reason why I'd think that only the blood pressure medication would have affected her is because it could have caused a heart attack in high enough doses. I'm no expert, but this is my understanding based on my knowledge of pharmaceuticals.

Usually if the same kind of medicine is taken unless it is some kind of fast acting poison the body usually rejects it... the mixture of pills that your friend took could have reacted with each other causing death... but the body acted fast enough.

People usually survive pills... not always but most often.

After futher consideration.

Does it really matter now? Luckily she lived, hopefully she has gotten some help or just outgrown whatever caused her to do that. Wondering if it would of really killed her seems somewhat morbid.
