Should there be a Vista Game Capability Thread?

Bateluer

I looked over at the OS forum and didn't see one stickied or on the front couple of pages. Search is next to worthless.

For those of you running Vista, what games work out of the box, which required tweaks, and which gave headaches, etc? Probably a good idea to post system specs and driver with these as well.

The main titles I'm interested in are the Fallout titles and the Infinity Engine games.

There was a Vista games thread, however to be honest I find gaming in Vista to be just as stable as XP,hardest thing you may need to do is select in properties of some games is run in" XP SP2 compatibility mode" and "run as Admin" of the game concerned.

I have yet to find a game that I can't run, last count was 25 games tested so far, this is in Vista x64 FYI.

I'm not including very old 16 bit games for obvious reasons with Vista x64(no 16 bit support in Vista x64)

Yes run ok I have them both installed ,even though I do play more TFC,DoD via Steam then CS .

FYI my Starcraft version is the" best seller series" and that comes with exp pack(BroodWars).

don't try World of Warcraft if you have an 8800 card......

I have no idea about 8800 with WoW,however I play WoW (Aeiry Peak server)with my 7800GT card and it has been solid on stability with Vista x64 .

Where'd you get this from? Buddy, I play two WoW's at once on the same computer with an 8800GTX. Sounds like you got some non-Vista issues.

I have a brand new system, fresh Vista install, latest NVidia drivers - still crashes WoW a few times each night - in fact it locks up my entire PC, even in windowed mode, even with sound disabled.

There are 8800 owners all over the Nvidia forums and the WoW forums complaining of similar issues.

COD2 runs completely fine all night - so it's not a heat issue or anything like that.

I know some lockups are due to overclocked video cards(even factory OC cards) etc..so if you have an OC card try reducing the speeds, same goes for CPU.

Are there any correlations between specs for the people complaining (other than the video card)? The only issue I've ever had was the screen (both of them) blacking out. But I used to have this issue when I would play WoW (one or two, didn't matter) and try to play a video or something. It seemingly went away, but the other day it did it once when running two WoW's at once. Although it hasn't done it since.

not OC'ing the video card at all

Screen just freezes, and a studdering type of noise comes out of the speakers - even if I play wow with the sound disabled.

That's weird.. what're you system specs? I noticed that Vista doesn't perform nearly as fluid on my nVidia-based motherboard, but runs very well on my Intel-based motherboard. To be exact, I have a large problem with opening files/directories on my nVidia-based PC in that it takes 3+ seconds if I haven't been in that drive... maybe I should see if Vista is powering down my drives.

Here are my two PC's specs if you'd like to compare. If you want, I could try running WoW on the second PC and seeing what happens:

C2D E6600
2GB OCZ DDR2-800 4-4-4-15
Gigabyte P965-DQ6 Intel 965P-based motherboard
eVGA e-GeForce 8800GTX
Western Digital Raptor 150GB
*Uses the onboard sound... a Realtek ALC888DD*

A64 X2 4400
2GB OCZ DDR-400 2-3-2-15
DFI LanParty NF4 UT-D nVidia nForce 4 Ultra-based motherboard
eVGA e-GeForce 7600GT (replacing my busted BFG 6800GT OC)
Western Digital Raptor 74GB
*Uses the onboard sound... a Realtek ALC... something*

So if you want me to try certain drivers, I can do so. I'm using fairly old drivers on my 8800.. 101.70 I think. My sound drivers are also old on that machine. If any of these look more like yours, I can give them a try when I get the chance.

I'm using a Nvidia based board not had any problems, however from what he is describing sounds more serious then just a Vista software problem.

Well, my nVidia-based system has slow HDD access that acts like it's putting the HDDs to sleep. I haven't tried any nVidia drivers as I'd rather not 😛. My intel-based system has no problems with any of the drives.
