Should the same cables be used between router-modem as router-client?

I have heard that there is two kinds of network cables (crossed and straight) that might be used when setting up a wired network. Between which hardware components should the two cables be used?

1. Router to client (computer)("the normal cat 5 cable")?
2. Modem to router?
3. Client to client?
4. Modem to switch?
5. Switch to client?
6. Switch to router?

I am particularly intersted in 1 to 3 and hope that someone can take a few seconds and help me out here.

If the equipment is auto MDI/MDIX, it will not matter, just use straight through cables. The exception is always a client to client connection. This connection will have to be a cross over cable.

Actually, gigabig NICs in PCs are apparently autosensing, too. So no need for a crossover cable between two gigabit NICs.
