Should The Federal Government Mandate The Purchase Of Life Insurance?

At some point, everyone is going to need it and if they don't have it, it will impact interstate commerce in one way or another.

So, should the federal government force everyone to buy life insurance?

If so, should the federal government force companies to write policies to people who are going to die in the near future at the same rate as someone who is relatively healthy?

The federal government shouldn't force anyone to buy anything.

Life insurance is one of the few things you should have, especially if you have a family that would need it, in the event of your premature demise. And a funeral, plot, headstone / marker, burial / cremation can run thousands.

Cremation runs well under a thousand if you have no funeral service or visitation.

What do you mean you don't need life insurance? What if you have kids and you die when they're young.

What if you have no kids, aren't married, and have no direct beneficiary?

We need less government, not more.

Make me your beneficiary.

It takes money to bury a person.

Generally life insurance is for those loved ones or family that are left behind after a person dies. Not taxable like stock and the money is paid upon your death, so you dont have to wait for some executor to finish up processing all the legal odds and ends.

Well you know, it is for the general welfare of the country and since Batesville, Indiana is the casket capital of the nation, I suppose you can also justify it under the commerce clause, too, since presumably most will buy caskets with the insurance money including those across state lines.

The real lesson here is that you should decapitate your loved ones when they die. That way you can dump them in the woods and the government won't force you to pay for burial or garbage disposal since they can't identify the body! ;)

I think they make the cardboard cremation boxes too. Commerce clause satisfied! :awe:
When I die, the written instructions to my family will be to put a stick of dynamite in my ass then have my body cremated. I think it would be funny.

That's good but potentially difficult in some jurisdictions. My instructions include being dragged out to the curb on trash day, but I'm just frugal that way.

Or have money? Life insurance is only needed for the poor (or lower middle class) or those who haven't prepared well for their family. But, we are all forced to buy life insurance if we work. It is called social security. So, this is a moot point.

No one is forcing you to buy health insurance. It isn't mandatory in the health care bill. Don't want it, then don't buy it. You'll just pay a bit more in tax. Same with those people who don't buy a house who pay more in tax, or those who don't buy an IRA who pay more in tax, or those who don't buy college classes who pay more in tax.

1. All insurance should be outlawed. It destabilizes the market (or at least prevents reaching honest equilibrium).
2. The government shouldn't mandate much of anything, especially private commerce. Regulation is one thing, but mandating is quite another.

Societal rules are stupid. I should be allowed to have sex with sheep on the bus then go home and not vaccinate any of my kids. God damn government forcing us to buy vaccines. It's all a scam by the healthcare lobby to make people not die so they don't need to pay out life insurance.
