I initially thought it wasn't fair like if you have a disease or something but another part of me can't imagine how they could regulate that. After much debate with my friends, I concluded that they should pay for two seats. what do you think?

Doesn't Southwest already do this?

They should pay for what they use (both seats not one). It's fair to everyone else, and even more incentive for them to lose some weight so they don't... you know maybe... DIE?

Unfortunately, I think they should.

They are paying for a "seat" when they buy a ticket, if they take up two seats that's lost revenue (one seat that cannot be filled now). If the plane is not full they should be allowed to board without additional cost.

hell yes.

The charge is based on room-to-person ratio. It's simple. Two seats, two people could've transported. Why should the airlines pay for your extra size that wastes another seat?

they should just sell space on a volume basis, just like UPS often charges by volume and not weight

you should pay $X for each inch of seat space, that way if you are tiny you pay less or you can pay more and get a first class amount of space in coach

I can see not paying for the extra seat if the plane isn't full, but if the plane is full, sure, they should pay for the seat. The resource the airlines charge for is space, pure and simple.

Yeah, who wants a fat person's stomachc spilling onto their lap during the flight. If they can stay within the confines of one seat then thats fine. If they have to sit in two seats however, make them pay. Maybe it'll be an incentive for them to lose weight

Well noone knows if they plane is full or not until you actually board it. People can always buy tickets late and fill the plane up.

I believe it is policy that they buy the extra ticket first, then if the plane is not at full capacity, you can get a refund on the second seat. But the prereq is that you must purchase 2 tickets if you will be causing whoever sits next to you discomfort or a safety hazard.

When I fly I like to be able to lay out across three seats. Since I'm only one person, I should only have to buy one ticket, right?

Hells yeah they should. You know how nasty it would be/it is to sit next to a fast person on an airplane for at least a couple of hours? ...

I've "enjoyed" a four hour flight next to someone who was using more of my seat than I was. I'm not in the business of offending people, but for crying out loud it was freaking disgusting and uncomfortable having a fat woman's bare armpit (and other chunky bits) grinding against my body for that long.

I would insert a joke about someone's mother here if I wasn't such a sensitive soul.
