Should people be allowed to own big, dangerous dogs?

I see this old guy in town almost everyday. He walks this big black dog (doberman I think). This dog is very strong and the guy cannot really control him at play, now imagine what it would be like when the dog is mad.

Anyway, I've seen a lot of cases in the news where kids and even grownups are victims of attacks by dogs that in my opinion should not be allowed to be in the hands of just anybody

What do you think?
 
I was almost killed by a pitbull when I was younger, it left me with a huge hole in my arm, 80+ stitches, plenty of scars and a hatred for dogs.

Even after all of that I really don't care what kind of dog people own, it's none of my business. I do not like pitbulls whatsoever, but it's all about the owner and not the dog.

My family has a Great Dane that is 20 lbs heavier than I am, and the sweetest dog in the world. Does she have the potential to be dangerous? Sure, any dog does. Do you or anybody else have the right to restrict my ownership of this very sweet, well-trained dog because she is potentially dangerous in the abstract? No way.
 
In Ontario pit bulls were recently banned. I think that even if a good person owns it then it can still have a mean streak in it and snap...
 
i own two dogs, st. bernard/boxer mix...when i or anyone that is familiar with them is around them, they are the nicest dogs...but if they dont know you they will bite you and won't stop attacking you unless me or someone who they really trust is there to call them off...

most dog attacks usually happen when people don't properly chain up/fence in their animals...
 
Pit bulls are a little different, I think, since the temperment in the breeding is naturally a bit aggressive. The people that tend to own pitbulls sometimes get them deliberately for the aggression and train them to be aggressive. I don't know if you can guard against that ahead of time, but I would be all for penalties on people who deliberately train their dogs to be aggressive.

god I miss the dane I had as a kid it was so funny.

thought it was a small dog and would jump on the couch to snuggle with guests. left the room once and came back to see my aunts arms waiving for help underneath him it was funny as hell.

Agreed. My pseudo aunt has two Rottweilers, the smaller one is around 120lbs. Those two dogs are the best trained/behaved dogs I've ever seen.

Danes are awesome and very very funny. I don't think Marmaduke, the comic, belongs in the paper because it wouldn't make sense to everybody, but to a Great Dane owner, some of those comics just ring SO true. 😀

My friend has a half greatdane/half balck lab, athe dog is HUGE (150lbs), but not tall and lean like a dane, more shorter like a lab). The dog freaks everytime theres a thudnerstorm and breaks doors and stuff, but its never laid a finger (or rather paw) on anyone. Last year the dog saved my friends sister's life from and a lot of his family's belongings when someone attempted to rob their house. Sure that dog was powerful, and the robbers probobly thought it was dangerous, but he (dog) saved the lives of memeber of its owners family.

That's like saying humans are not dangerous unless they're trained to be dangerous.

Animals are in many ways, simplified versions of humans. They learn, adapt, and behave in many ways without outside influences.

Living creatures are not computers. You do not program behavior, although you can influence it.

Many dogs are violent and mean for the same reasons many humans are, they were born like that.

Sure they can be trained, but at 1 point or another, they can just be wild, dangerous animals. And if they are too big or strong for the owner to control them, there will always be victims (usually others, not the owners themselves)

People shouldn't be allowed in public with very big or dangerous pets, period. If they can harm someone else, they don't belong in public.

Oh yeah, I'm an animal lover, I just don't believe in putting others in danger!

That's great. Then I guess you shouldn't purchase an aggressive breed, train it to be viscious, and haphazardly leave it in your front yard without a leash, then huh?

As for the rest of us who enjoy making our own decisions instead of grazing around like sheep under the control of fucktards like you, STFU. 🙂

Some of the meanest and most aggressive dogs I've ever met were improperly socialized daschunds. I got bit by one as a kid, the same one that chased all the kids in the neighborhood viciously whenever it had a chance. "Very big" does not equate to "very dangerous". I agree people shouldn't bring dangerous animals out in public, but how do you measure "dangerous" ahead of time? It's not always associated with size.
 
I don't think that some people understand just how strong dogs can be. In an apartment complex I used to live in, there was a girl who couldn't have weighed more than 100 pounds that owned a 100+ Akita. If that dog had the desire, it would have ripped that poor girls arm right out of the socket.

You really should be able to adequately control your pet if you are going to have it.

Big dogs can easily overpower many of their owners. That's a scary situation.

That is true, but training has a big influence on whether a dog will act violently or not, despite the animal's original tendencies.

what about this lady in NJ that was raising 4 Bengal Tigers at her home? couple times they escaped and the township and neighbors forced her to have them sent to a zoo.

I think there's a little difference between domestic and non-domestic animals from the start.

but that was kind of the point of the OP.

no one should have a dog they can't control. if the dog can pull the leash out of the owners hand and run at someone, even if it is just to play, that dog should be taken away.

some of you say, why should anyone have the right to determine what you keep, we can't but why should we have random dogs run at our children and knock them down?

if the owner cannot control the dog, then the dog should be taken away.
