Should NFL teams be allowed to ask Manti Teo if he is gay?

I don't think they should, but I don't think it matters. If they have to ask, I think that means they've already decided what the answer is.

I could understand asking in terms of trying to get the real story.

I don't know...maybe you should know if someone using the same locker room and showers might be sexually attracted to you. You may want to avoid any sign of impropriety or of attraction, and remain covered up.

You may want to be able to choose not to undress and shower in the presence of someone who might be sexually attracted to you, perhaps?

Tough question.

I'd ask him if he knew he was a moron.

This. I think I'd be more likely to draft him if he did come out and say he's gay. At least that would make some sense out what he did. Otherwise, I have to wonder about his intelligence.

But I'm sure it's illegal for any company to ask about his preferences.

Company yes but not sure if that would fit in a draft.

But I agree I would not care if hes gay, but an idiot... NFL has plenty of them and does not need more.

protip, you already have dozens of times in your life most likely and always will continue to.

This 'locker room' bullshit argument is the same one they tried to use with DADT too and it holds even less water here. If he is indeed gay, have the players he's played with for years already and seen hundreds of times in the locker room suddenly going to retroactively feel different? Nope.

It doesn't make a single bit of difference whatsoever what his preference is. It doesn't impact his ability to do his job in any possible way. The argument is simply thinly veiled disgust for homosexuality manifesting itself in a situation where that fear can be exploited. I'd be more concerned about him being a liar at worst or a complete moron at best.

I don't think they should be disallowed, but don't think they should because it's completely irrelevant to how well he plays football. And if they did ask, I'd fully support him saying "none of your fvcking business" and leaking the story to the media naming names and teams that would ask him such a stupid question.

This is just silly. Only the homophobs would be worried. I bet there are quite a few players who are "secretly" gay and no one knows.

His sexual preferences have nothing to do with his ability to play the game and do his job as a player.

Since no active player has yet come out of the closet, the homophobe culture in the NFL and the media attention to the team, players, etc - it's a legitimate question. It would also confirm that his imaginary gf was a hoax and places his character in question. Add that he sucked at the combine and he's now a mid to low round draft pick.

his imaginary GF was a hoax and confirmed. the guy that did it (and was proven faked the voice) admited it. he also said he did it without Teo's knowledge (at first he did figure it out later but didn't want the news to ruin teh season).

I don't think Teo is gay. I do think he is stupid though.

I should have said if he was in on the hoax which is still unknown.

the guy that did it said teo was not in on it. Though he said he suspects he figured it out toward the end. Teo released a statement that said he figured it out but didn't want overshadow what his team was doing. i do understand that.

now teo is a idiot though. with that and his shitty performance at the combine i would have issues drafting him. I don't think he is going to be a dominate Linebacker either.

Oh yeah, I did 4 years active duty in the US Army. I'm 100% certain I've showered and slept with gay men.

Depends on your state...sexual orientation is not federally protected at this point under any legislation, though I expect that it will be soon and employers would do well to treat it as if it were.

Hmm... Lol!

Seriously though what difference should his preference have? He isn't that great of a linebacker nor is he putting 100% into the combine. Don't draft him...

I definitely think they shouldn't ask. Whether they should be allowed to is another matter... on the one hand I support free speech but on the other hand it opens the door for discrimination. And I think it would be dumb for NFL teams to ask him anyway. What does that even accomplish?

One thing I heard earlier today on a podcast I was listening to, they had Colts punter Pat McAfee on the show and he admitted that he was led on and nearly "Catfished" by a woman pretending to be interested in him. He never did anything beyond email communication, which he broke off when things started to get fishy, but he later saw the same woman who tried to trick him on the Catfish show. He said that several of his teammates admitted to having been led on to varying degrees, and that he doesn't think Te'o's situation is really extraordinary. If you think about it, when you're famous for whatever reason (being a pro athlete, rock star, etc.) you're going to have lots of people trying to exploit you for money. Te'o's situation is a little weirder since it went on for so long and he wasn't a pro athlete, but it's still not that outlandish.

The bigger concern with Te'o is that his performance at the Combine was rather poor. Slow 40 time, looked bad on the shuffle drill too.

Well, the US Army scrupulously separated the males and females...

We were never trusted to shower or sleep together... presumably because of the sexual attraction, whether accurate or not.

I presume that if females were on NFL teams, there would be separate locker and shower facilities for the same reason.

I have always assumed this separation, logical or not, was because of the sexual attraction.

If sexual attraction is the given reason for the separation, then logically it would be the same for any sexual attraction.

But maybe it's not the same and maybe I'm wrong about the reasons?

I'm certain that I could have shared a locker room or shower or quarters with a woman without attacking her, but I don't think the US Army was quite so certain.

And as I said, I know I've shared facilities with gay men and I had no problems or even a hint of a problem.
