Should nature camera crews help wildlife in need?

I know that most people will say let nature takes it course

That is all fine and dandy but with man causing many species to become extinct I think they should help when they can.

I am not a normally a bear fan. I actually do not like bears at all but as some know, the polar bears are slowly becoming extinct due to loss of icecaps.

They showed a big beautiful polar bear swimming miles into the ocean in search of food. I found the filming spectacular seeing such a huge land animal swimming so far from shore. Due to lack of food polar bears have been seen swimming as far as 60 miles from shore in search of food and many drowning. The polar bear did not find any and returned to land where there were only walruses. The polar bear that had not eaten in months attacked the giant walruses out of desperation and endured wounds that would soon be fatal.

One simple shot of a long range rifle against one of these walruses which are plentiful would result in a threatened species animal living for another year. But down goes another polar bear as their species is slowly becoming extinct. It is just a little sad to see such a incredible animal dying due to lack of food.

That was a sad scene - not sure how I feel about the situation though. I was rooting for the bear to get one of those walruses. Walruses suck.

Heh, walruses are such funny looking creatures on land. But at least walruses don't go around killing bear cubs like Buffalos in Africa kill lion cubs.

After suffering the terrible wounds, the polar bear dug a shallow hole in the ground like it was digging its own grave and just went and laid down to die I presume.

About like the film crews that show us the images of all the starving kids in other countries. As Sam Kinison used to say "Geez, couldn't the film crew give that kid a sandwich"?

I do not think they should interfere. If they did, then the animals might start to depend on "divine intervention" and slowly lose their survival instincts. Yeah it'd take a long time and lot more than just here and there, but all the same. Now if it was hunters trying to kill the animal then yeah, interfere all you want (aside from say killing them).

I don't know that they should interfere. However, I think if I would've been on that camera crew, I would have. I almost cried when I watched that episode. And since then I haven't watched another episode of Planet Earth. It's stupid and irrational, but being aware of it doesn't change anything.

In nature, sh1t happens. In real life sh1t happens. Deal with it. You should appreciate the amazing footage of Planet Earth instead of pushing yourself to be more ignorant of the worlds little problems.

Well since we are responsible for many species alive today nearing extinction it would be nice to help out when we can.

As much as i agree with you... it would be hard for the camera crew to. They're there to do a job... i'm sure most of them ARE compassionate towards animals... how can you not be when you make a career of it filming them? And second, they didn't know for sure how it was going to turn out... there could have been a chance the bear would have won, which would have been even more fantastic. They had no way of knowing.

It's nature, and things like this happen... it would have bothered me watching it too. But my real beef are zoos, carnivals/circuses, game hunting, etc.

This is nature at work... it's not cruelty. What WE do, is cruelty.

And besides, watching the bear die like that shows us what reality really is... that these animals are in trouble, and often because of what we're doing. More good could possibly come out of this than if the camera crew had simply fed the bear, and not show us what their conditions really are like.

I am still amazed at how far polar bears can swim, there are now reports of them swimming 60-100 miles off land in search of food, with many drowning. It is almost as if they know they are on a near suicide mission but do it in hopes of finding food somehow. It is a majestic journey.

What is our reason for helping to keep a species alive? How do we know that this isn't a part of the cycle and part of "nature"? Are we doing it because we don't want to miss this one animal or because it has an important place on the planet?

Yep. Helping this bear out goes against all natural order. It would be a bad idea.

Anytime we mess with mother nature it doesn't turn out as we had intended.

What the hell is a camera crew going to do to save a 1,200 lb bear capable of killing a man as easy as you killing an ant?

mother nature is a bitch sometimes..we just have to deal with it.

besides helping the bear at that time would not have insured its survival or the survival of the species...we are supposed to be impartial unbiased observers...

we are supposed to not exist as we film/study them

This is just like the whole spotted owl debacle. Hundreds of millions of dollars, special laws, etc to save one dumb bird that was going extinct. Huge plots of land saved for their survival.

Guess what? The spotted owl is now getting owned by another owl that is eating it and mating with them because of the increased habitat.

Stop messing with mother nature. She doesn't want our help.
